Job Description
TRAVEL RN / Registered Nurse / Med Surg RN / Medical Surgical Nurse
Estimated payment breakdown
~$2098.00-$2242.00/wk*
~$936.00-$1080.00 in weekly taxable income
~$26.00/hr-$30.00/hr*
Estimate assumes an 12 hour shift. Hourly rate may change based on shift length.

13 Weeks - 12 Hour Nights; 12 hr nights, weekends as scheduled - 36GH - Required: BLS - Preferred: NIHSS, Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) - First to float.
COVID VACCINE REQUIRED: Fully vaccinated means either 2 shots of Moderna or Pfizer or 1 shot of J&J; If a traveler wants to decline based on a Medical or Religious reason, please have them fill out the appropriate Exemption Form and email it to the address on the form. These should be done ASAP as they have to go through a council to be approved or denied
Unit 5th Floor (5E - Observation & 5T): (Cost Center 6030) &
Pandemic Unit (2T): (Cost Center 8942)
# beds 5th Floor consists of 2 towers: 5T is the 'new' tower & 5E is the 'old' tower.
2T currently the Pandemic Unit - (Pre-COVID this was the peds unit, but now some peds are on 5th floor)
5E = 48-beds (18 of these use to be observation, low risk CP & mostly medical short stays, but now all MedSurg)
5T= 22-beds (MedSurg only)
2T = 23-beds (would not float travelers there)
Certs BLS is required
Requirements Must have at least 1 previous travel assignment
Ratios 1:6-7
EMR Sunrise
Charge Nurse/House Supervisor Charge nurse on each tower - They take a full patient assignment on both day & night shift
Nurse Aides Nursing assistants & UA2's (UA2's are cross-trained to be NA's & unit receptionists)
Ratios: 1:14 (They like to have 3 on 5E & 2 on 5T for both shifts)
Weekend Requirement Could be every other weekend, possibly less (She has some steady weekend staff)
Nights F/S, Days S/S
Holidays Possibly - depending on the needs of the unit. Must be flexible.
Scrub Color RN's: Navy blue top & bottom, navy scrub jackets, no hoodies
Tele Any patient can be on tele. Monitored remotely on the 3rd floor. RN can check the rhythm on the tele pack. Everyone goes through an arrhythmia class for basic knowledge, taking a pre-test & a post-test (this is NOT a pass/fail test).
Nurse's Read Strips? No
Drips No vasoactive drips - only heparin
RT/Vents RT is in-house 24/7 - Could have patients on Intermittent Bipap or High Flow - managed by RT
Hospitalist or Intensivist in house Hospitalist in-house 24/7
Intensivist in the ICU 24/7
Also have residence in-house 24/7
IV Team IV team in-house 24/7 & also have a PICC team
(RN's do not start their own IV's on this unit)
Shifts 12 hr shifts: 7a-7:30p; 7p-7:30a
The clinical assistant starts the schedule then the manager finalizes it. They do allow input from the traveler & would consider block schedules as long as the needs of the unit are met.
Floating Could be floated to the 4th floor MedSurg, 6th floor Onc w/ MedSurg overflow.
IF they have tele background & the ability to read strips & titrate drips they could float to tele if they were comfortable with this. would have to titrate drips & read strips if floated)
Floor specific orientation 1st day w/ staff developer to go over charting, Pyxis, computer, etc. This doesn't take the whole 12 hours, so they come to floor after, for approximately 4 hours, then the next 2 days would be w/ a preceptor, as well as with the DC/Admit RN)
Common diagnosis / Types of patients 5th floor is heavier on medical, lighter on surgical. Get occasional post-ops but no heavy bowels or joints (Ortho goes to the 4th floor). Pre-COVID was stroke unit. (COVID patients only on 2T)
Additional Notes 1) They have a lot of resources: wound nurses, diabetic educators, radiology/OR transport, DC/Admit RN during the day, NA's, & UA2's (unit secretary & NA)
2) Must be used to working on a fast paced unit with high turnover. Could have 3 discharges & get 3 new in one shift.
3) We are going to start running 2 cardiac drips on 5T, Amiodarone and Cardizem. This is only for 5T. 5E side of the 5th floor remains drip free. Drop experience is a major bonus!
NOTE: Discharges after 7 pm would be the responsibility of the staff RN. of the staff RN.
