GENERAL SUMMARY
Surgical Technologists work under the supervision and delegatory authority of a surgeon to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive and non-invasive surgical procedures, ensuring that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. Surgical technologists are experts in the theory and application of the principles of asepsis and sterile technique to combine the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation and tools and technologies to facilitate a physicians performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. The surgical technologist handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure. He/she understands the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon. He/she has the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and is constantly on vigil for maintenance of the sterile field.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Prepares and anticipates instrumentation, equipment, and supplies for usage during the procedure.
- Sets up the sterile back table and Mayo stand with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions needed for the procedure.
- Performs initial instrument, sharps and sponge counts with the circulator.
- Participates in the surgical site and patient verification during the briefing process.
- Assists with draping the patient and establishing the sterile field.
- Anticipates the needs of the surgeon by passing instruments and supplies to surgeon during procedure.
- Maintains highest standard of sterile technique during the procedure.
- Prepares and passes off specimen(s) as appropriate
- Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization.
- Assists other members of the team with cleaning the operating room to facilitate turnovers.
- Participates in debriefing and quality improvement practices ensuring quality patient care.
- Assists in the development of a proper learning environment in relation to orientation and education of personnel and students.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

STANDARD QUALIFICATIONS

Education / Training:
- High School Diploma or equivalent. In lieu of education requirements, 5 years of related experience per the job description will also be accepted.
- Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program preferred.
- Prior training required by a hospital, Surgical Technology, or military program that meets the knowledge, skill, and ability required to perform the role.
Work Experience:
- 1 year of relevant experience. Minimum of one-year experience is preferred for all roles.
Certification, Licensure, Registration:
- CRT-Surgical Technologist, Certified (CST) - NBSTSA National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting 180 Days preferred
- Preferred Membership to the Association of Surgical Technologists (AST)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) - AHA American Heart Association Upon Hire required Or
- Basic Life Support (BLS) - ARC American Red Cross Upon Hire required
Other Qualifications:
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills, organizational skills, and able to adapt to rapidly changing environment.
