Environmental Specialist
Position Summary:The Environmental Specialist will support a dynamic EHS team who aspire to deliver solutions and provide support to our team of 1,400+ employees in 130 locations in the United States and Canada. The successful candidate will work closely with Crystal Clean (CC) personnel and EHS Management to provide the regulatory research, guidance and compliance management to assist the company in proactively managing regulatory compliance across all aspects of the business. The effective candidate will energetically support CCs leadership team on their drive for increased efficiency and measurable improvement.
Essential Duties:
Regulatory Responsibilities
- Environmental permitting New facilities, permit modifications, renewals, etc.
- Support Sales, Marketing, Operations and other departments with regulatory research and recommendations with respect to new or expanding business segments, business acquisitions, and geographic expansion.
- Process CHEMTREC release reports in rotation with other environmental staff.
- Shared oversight for release response actions; must be available as necessary to provide release response coordination and assistance, identify state and federal regulatory reporting obligations and report accordingly. Identify, procure, approve and manage environmental response and remediation services as needed.
- Conduct environmental incident investigations and identify/document root-cause analyses (RCA) of spills and spill response/clean-up activities. Develop appropriate corrective and preventive action (CAPA) plans.
- Knowledge of EHS Management Systems, Enablon preferred, but not required.
Facilities Compliance Responsibilities
- Understand all requirements associated with the CC environmental permits, track permit compliance in Enablon and communicate such requirements to facility management.
- Develop and maintain all environmental programs and plans SWPPP, SPCC, Contingency plans, air permits, storage tank permits, hazardous and non-hazardous waste permits, etc.
- Develop, complete and file all necessary documentation and/or reports in accordance with applicable reporting and record keeping requirements periodic environmental reporting, inspection checklists, spill reporting as needed, etc.
- Identify and implement environmental training programs for employees and contractors.
- Assist in the maintenance of the EHS Management System, Enablon, for environmental obligations, including but not limited to completing compliance calendars, entering/tracking incidents, permit and plan requirements, reporting obligations, and action item follow up.
Audit Responsibilities
- Conduct EHS audits in accordance with HCC audit program.
- Ensure all audit results are entered into Enablon.
- Collaborate with facilities on audit CAPAs and reporting, to ensure timely closure of all audit results.
- Identify EHS best management practices for implementation on a company-wide basis, as appropriate.
- Support CHWMEG and company-specific waste vendor audits of CC locations.
Position Qualification Requirements:

Core Competencies:
- Ability to manage multiple projects with varying deadlines and consistently meet deadlines.
- Ability to interpret State and Federal regulations into easy-to-understand business communications.
- Knowledge of Federal and State environmental spills/releases reporting requirements and release response strategies is a plus.
- Available 24/7 as needed to coordinate and assist with spill responses.
- Ability to conduct comprehensive incident investigations, identify root causes and CAPAs.
- Knowledge of EHS Management Systems/Enablon preferred but not required.
- Excellent organizational and follow-up skills.
- Quick learner and a desire to learn more about various RCRA regulations.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to communicate at all levels of the organization.
- Strong customer service skills.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
- A track record of a strong work ethic and reliability.
Work Experience:
- 3-7 years regulatory related work experience.
Education, Certificates, Licenses, or Designations:
- Bachelors Degree.
Specific Skills:
- Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
- Intermediate knowledge of EHS Management Systems.
Work Environment:
While performing essential duties of this position an individual regularly works indoors, and may be required to sit for long periods. Individual will be required to regularly talk, hear, see and often reach with hands, stand, walk, use a computer keyboard, mouse, telephone, and other office equipment. Noise level of the environment is generally quiet. This position may require occasional travel by car or air to other HCC locations, vendors, or agencies.
