Clinical Support Nurse
Summary:
Under the general supervision of the Nurse Manager (or designee) and within hospital and departmental policies and procedures the clinical support nurse functions as a clinical expert to the inpatient units and Emergency Department facilitates timely transfer of patients to a higher level of care assists with required educational needs and assists the Nursing Supervisor with appropriate utilization of resources. All essential functions performed in this position reflect the age specific needs of the patients.

Identifies and assesses emergency situations. Initiates appropriate response and intervention. Plans for potential needs during emergency situations.
Collaborates with Nursing Supervisor to provide support to nursing staff. Makes rounds to evaluate nursing care. Initiates corrective measures as indicated.
Provides functional guidance and education to RNs CNAs and other licensed personnel as required.
Responds to Code Blue Rapid Response Team Code Grey Code Stroke and similar hospital emergencies. Proactively rounds on high-risk patients and assists in facilitation of transfers to higher level of care
Collaborates with nurse leaders CPPI and staff to ensure that Newport Hospital nursing achieves nursing Newport Hospital and Lifespan strategic plan goals (i.e. Joint Commission compliance Magnet designation etc.).
Completes occurrence reports as required. Initiates follow-up or corrective interventions as indicated.
Consults with Clinical Manager or Charge Nurse regarding unit routines and any professional development opportunities identified.
May assume shift charge responsibility on an assigned unit. Responsibility includes maintaining an overview of unit activities and delegating work responsibilities with equitable assignments. Makes bed and patient assignments and assigns primary patients to staff.
Assists nursing staff with procedures policies and care of patients. Readily adapts to change and welcomes new approaches when circumstances demand.
Work closely with nursing staff to develop an environment that promotes staff growth role competency and proficiency in nursing skills/critical thinking.
Tracks and monitors new nursing staff progress during the orientation period to promote RN professionalism and provide guidance to the Novice RN.
Assesses learning needs of nursing staff on a continual basis. Plans develops delivers and tracks successful staff completion of required unit and hospital competencies and provides just-in-time education for individuals and groups to maintain a culture of quality and safety
Assists with the introduction and integration of new patient care technology and equipment.
Round frequently on inpatient units and Emergency Department and act as a resource for staff.
Work with staff to improve patient experience
Performs other related duties as required.
Other information:
BASIC KNOWLEDGE:
Baccalaureate degree in Nursing preferred.
Must have current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island..
Certification in specialty area preferred or must be obtained within 12 months of hire.
Maintains current AHA BLS and AHA ACLS required or must be obtained within 6 months of hire. Completes Safety Care Training within 6 months of hire.
Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span with consideration of aging processes human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.
Effective and professional communication techniques.
Critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Excellent organization time management and multitasking abilities.
EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of 3-5 years relevant clinical experience in medical/surgical nursing two years critical care/emergency department experience preferred. Demonstrated clinical leadership as a Charge Nurse and Nurse Preceptor
Must be able to demonstrate competence to participate in interdisciplinary formulation of individual plans of care and to direct monitor and evaluate the nursing care furnished. Must possess a very high level of written electronic and verbal communication skills; the ability to conceptualize develop and effect quality patient services; and commitment to a culture of quality and safety
WORKING ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Acute care hospital environment. Works with medical equipment and has direct patient contact. Any potential hazards are minimized by adherence to established safety procedures and precautions including use safety equipment and protective clothing.General hospital environment with occasional stressful conditions associated with patient care. Position requires frequent standing walking pushing stretchers/beds sitting lifting over 50 lbs with good body mechanics. Must be able to use both hands/wrists and perform work that deviates from neutral position and be able to perform fine motor skills. Must have accurate near and far vision 20/20 depth perception and discriminate among colors.
INDEPENDENT ACTION:
Plans and organizes priorities for effective patient care within the scope of existing departmental policies generally refers specific problems to supervisor where clarification of departmental policies and procedures may be required.
