Responsibilities
Under general supervision and according to established policies and procedures administers prescribed therapeutic doses of radiation, positions the patients as appropriate, prepares the treatment room(s) , explains the procedures to patients, monitors the patient during therapy
procedures. Observe radiation safety standards, taking and developing simulation and port films, maintaining appropriate patient files and records. Maintain a clean, orderly and safe work area. Demonstrate knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to care for the age group(s) served. Performs others related duties as requested by authorized personnel.- The Radiation Therapist reviews patient charts, establishes patient identification and prepares the radiation therapy equipment and treatment areas. Informs patients regarding procedures involved with their radiation therapy treatments.
- The Radiation Therapist administers the radiation in proper dosage with the accordance with the prescription of the Radiation Oncologist; selects appropriate technical factors by reviewing patient therapy records which include determining proper machine set-up radiation exposure dose and time and positioning equipment and patient to ensure accurate and effective therapy treatments and utilize various immobilization devices as required.
- Observe patient(s) during their radiation treatment schedule for any possible side effects and notify the Radiation Oncologist as appropriate.
- Develop simulation and port films and marks appropriately; maintains simulation and port films files; practice sterile techniques when required; ensure that equipment and treatment rooms are properly maintained; notify supervisor and or medical physicist of equipment problems; obtains and returns supplies while keeping therapy stocked; keeps current regarding new technology, techniques and methods.
- Actively participate in continuing education requirements.
- Essential Functions:
- Administer, review and interpret treatment plan/prescription for accuracy.
- Documents all relevant data.
- Assess the health status and care needs of the patient.
- Acquire necessary health status information.
- Review patients charts during daily treatments and weekly with appropriate health care team members at
chart rounds. - Define and outline treatment sites in simulation process either on the Simulator or Linear Accelerator
duplicating geometric parameters as appropriate. - Design and fabricate patient immobilization, positioning, boluses and blocking devices as needed.
- Schedule procedures according to priority.
- Maintain schedules according to established policies and procedures.
- Inspect and report all malfunctions of treatment and simulator equipment, safety locks and monitoring
equipment. - Perform daily quality assurance checks on therapy equipment as directed by the Medical Physicist.
- Observe patients during radiation therapy procedures and reports and change in patient condition, psychological or physiological to the Radiation Oncologist or appropriate personnel.
- Maintain knowledge of current treatment modalities and trends.
- Working Conditions:
- Normal patient care environment working with Oncology patients; occasional exposure to patients with
possible infectious diseases. - Minimal exposure to radiation when established safety procedures are followed.

Requirements
Licensure / Certification / Registration:
- Technician Radiologic Technologist specializing in Radiation Therapy credentialed from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) required.
Education:
- Requires successful completion of a Radiation Therapy program of study sufficient to meet requirements of Radiation Therapist registry.
Work Experience:
- Possess analytical skills necessary to provide accurate radiation treatments, interpret physicians prescriptions for such treatment, effectively duplicate the treatment plan and provide accurate care instructions to patients.
- Must possess and demonstrate the necessary discretion in dealing with confidential information, communication skills, initiative, tact, diplomacy and dependability to perform al duties of the position Must have the ability to establish and maintain rapport with patients, families,
employees, physicians, supervisors and contacts external to the health system.
