Job Summary and Qualifications
Position Summary: The Surgical Technologist performs patient care under the direction of the OR Director and/or Assistant Director or OR Board Runner. Practices autonomous, evidence-based nursing care in a collaborative environment, provides culturally sensitive care for all patients specific tour population served, coordinates nursing care with regard to the wholeness of the patient while providing individualized care, practices in accordance with professional standards of care and codes of ethics, and adheres to the principles of the FRMC Mission, Vision and Philosophy. The Surgical Technologist must be able to: 1. Manage the physical environment of the surgical suite 2. Monitor and direct the utilization of resources related to the care of the patients
3. Effectively communicate pertinent information to appropriate individuals 4. Display dexterity in the use of surgical instruments and of step-by-step knowledge of specific surgical procedures 5. Anticipate the needs of the surgeon 6. Assist in coordinating and expediting room turnover 7. Pull cases for the next days procedures 8. Participate in orientation of new employees 9. Assist nursing staff 10. Assist with patient transport 11. Maintains a positive attitude that reflects the mission and values of FRMC Department of Surgical Services

Duties: 1. Collaborates with OR Board Runner in decision-making regarding patient flow. 2. Demonstrates flexibility in response to unexpected changes in work volume, emergencies, staffing, and / or schedule
changes. 3. Willing to adjust personal schedule in order to complete workload in support of increased patient needs. 4. Teamwork oriented, actively engaged in improving and promoting a positive work environment. 5. Addresses patient/family concerns/satisfaction issues. Informs department leadership of concerns. Engaged in patient satisfaction. 6. Informs OR Director or Assistant Director or OR Board Runner of any unit issues in real time. 7. Implements practices of sterile technique in the preparation of surgical cases to prevent surgical site infection. 8. Assists anesthesia provider as needed for the care of the patient during surgical procedure 9. Participates in the time out with the surgical team prior to the start of each procedure and completes the surgical site verification checklist. 10. Accurately records, handles, and verifies the labeling of specimens; demonstrates care of specimens following department policy. 11. Effectively communicates with the physician in accounting for all sponges, needles, and instruments during and after the procedure and documents on the patients record. 12. Uses age-specific guidelines to position patients to promote circulation, respiratory, neuromuscular, homeostasis, and patient privacy during surgical procedures. 13. Positions patients safely during surgical procedure; pads and protects bony prominences. 14. Follows department policy and procedure regarding application of safety strap, grounding pads, and positioning devices used during the surgical procedures and documents in nursing record. 15. Complies with competency expectations and adheres to Infection Control standards. 16. Demonstrates competence in preparing and cleaning of OR suite before and between cases. 17. Applies principles of aseptic technique to daily work practices including checking for package integrity, placing sterile items in sterile area, monitoring non-sterile personnel, confining contamination, reporting breaks in technique, and minimizing traffic flow. 18. Monitors instruments/supplies to ensure sterility following the event related sterility. 19. Monitors to assure that patients are prepped and draped properly for all procedures. 20. Establishes, maintains and sets up a sterile field using principles of aseptic technique and monitors for maintenance during the case. 21. Makes decisions reflecting knowledge of assigned case and instruments and/or trays to be pulled for the procedure. 22. Consistently collaborates with other members of the nursing team in order to maintain equipment and supplies for surgical procedures.
23. Checks all equipment/instruments needed prior to each procedure to ensure proper functioning. 24. Reviews preference card prior to case to determine if all instruments/supplies/equipment are present prior to the start of a case. 25. Demonstrates thorough knowledge of instrument processing, sterilization, and biological monitoring. 26. Knowledgeable of unit policy concerning recall of sterilized items if sterility is in question. 27. Follows department policy to deliver ordered medications to the sterile field. 28. Accurately labels medications (name of medication and strength) including labeling all containers containing the medication on the back table (syringes, medicine cups, basins). 29. Appropriately responds to the patient in an emergency situation or physically distressful situation. 30. Adheres to patient safety procedures including those related to immobilization devices such as side rails, transportation devices, and OR and fracture tables. 31. Is consistently ready and prepared for assigned cases and has patient in the surgical suite 15 minutes before the scheduled time as directed by clinical coordinator or designee. 32. Is knowledgeable of department PI/QI initiatives and actively participates in data collection and improving outcomes in the department through unit committees. 33. Completes occurrence report as needed and participates in the Root Cause Analysis process if necessary to change process and affect patient outcomes. 34. Participates in measures to improve productivity and collects data to evaluate outcomes. Data collected specifically to include: a. Turnover time b. First Case Starts 35. Complies with organizational policies, clinical programs and systems necessary to support changing patient care needs. 36. Speaks positively about the organization and demonstrates positive attitude and behavior in the work environment. 37. Serves as a change agent for hospital/department initiatives. 38. Responsible for all communication from leadership. 39. Supports a culture of accountability, teamwork, and effective communication.
What qualifications you will need:
Minimum Requirements:
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent. Graduate of an Accredited Surgical Technician program or
proof of on-the-job training with experience.
Licensure/Certifications: Current Basic Life Support (BLS) upon hire. Certification preferred.
Experience: Preferred 1 year OR Experience but none required. Excellent communication (verbal, written), interpersonal, organizational, leadership, exceptional interpersonal relations and problem solving skills required.
What qualifications you will need:
- Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
