Job Description
Cutter Grinder Operator
General Responsibilities:
Perform various operations to inspect cutters, set up and operate automatic cutter grinding machine to sharpen a variety of used milling cutters, maintain records and logs of cutter usage, wear and inventories.
Responsibilities:- Follow grind schedule to remove cutters from milling machines using open end wrench and babbit hammer. Remove arbor nut and lead vibration damper, bushings, outboard bearing and cutter. Take cutter to grinding area. Wash and blow off cutter, set up cutter on grinding arbor. Follow wear inspection procedure using microscope with graduated scale to determine amount of grind required. Adjust position of wheel, line up flute and tighten collar locking in position for indexing. Adjust vertical and horizontal location of wheel, set amount of feed, and start automatic grinding cycle. Monitor operation of grinding and wheel dressing, checking for cleanup of worn cutter edges. Remove sharpened cutter from grinder and arbor, use digital mike and fixture to check reduction in cutter radius, tag and return cutter to milling machine.
- Visually inspect new cutters received from vendors, checking for chips, end to end balance for defects, and file test for hardness. Use optical comparator as necessary for inspection of cutters and bench centers to check such as rake, spacing, run out, etc.
- Change grinding wheel as required, usually daily, and rotate dressing diamond daily. Change diamond as required, usually monthly.
- Change index plate as required for special cutters with various number of flutes and occasionally change helix control. Perform minor maintenance according to preventative maintenance schedule. Monitor coolant level and add as required. Clean out sludge build up.
- Maintain daily logs of all cutters ground and enter required information on individual cutter control cards and log sheets. Conduct monthly inventory of all cutters and log cutter life. Maintain inventory log and calculate cutter usage. Give monthly cutter inventory to appropriate personnel.
- Detect and report any discrepancies, equipment malfunctions, unusual situations or other problems to the Foreman. Maintain equipment and work area in a clean and orderly condition. Follow all safety rules, regulations and practices.
- Perform other similar or related duties as required or assigned.
Climate:
Demanding, fast-paced position resulting from deadline pressures, simultaneous competing demands and changing priorities.
Requirements:- Knowledge of charts, specifications, and micrometers
- 1-2 years experience preferred
- Use of numbers including decimals
- Light physical effort required, equivalent to lifting, pushing, pulling 5 to 25 pounds
- High School Diploma or GED Equivalent
Hours: 5:00 PM - 5:00 AM B shift (Wed-Thurs-Fri-Sat / Thurs-Fri-Sat)
