    Description

    Summary:

    Participates as a member of the CH of SA Pulmonary, Cystic Fibrosis and Sleep Clinics. She/he participates in planning, development and implementation of patient and family education. She/he will be responsible for the care of asthma patients, ventilator and trach patients, neuromuscular patients with respiratory complications and cystic fibrosis patients. Coordinates care between the primary care physician, other health care providers, community resources, family, and the individual child or adolescent.

    The CHRISTUS Childrens Hospital, established in 1959, was the first childrens hospital in South-Central Texas. Located downtown, this 190-plus-bed hospital serves more than 70,000 children annually from San Antonio, South Texas and around the world. The hospital (in partnership with Baylor College of Medicine) is the only academic childrens hospital in San Antonio. Our highly specialized services meet the unique medical needs of children, from Pediatric and Neonatal Intensive Care to Childrens Emergency Services, the latest treatments for deformities of the spine including titanium rib implants and halo traction, a Heart Center, a specialized asthma program, a highly regarded Cancer and Blood Disorders Center, and growing maternal services to include consultation, delivery, and maternal fetal medicine.

    Requirements:

    • 4 year BA/BS degree from an accredited institution preferred.
    • Must be a graduate of a C. A. A. H. E. P. approved respiratory therapy program.
    • Knowledge of current social, economic and public health issues relevant to asthma and other pulmonary conditions.
    • Ability to establish goals and objectives
    • Ability to organize and complete work in a timely fashion.
    • Knowledge and ability to use data entry screens or data base software (Examples: Excel, Access, etc.).
    • Knowledge and ability to use computer office programs
    • (MS Office with MS Word) and Internet access programs (MS Outlook)
    • Collect and analyze data and make recommendations
    • Communicate effectively with English and Spanish speaking participants or their families (able to speak Spanish effectively or effectively arrange for an interpreter as needed)
    • Teach participants and/or their families in asthma prevention techniques and information.
    • Must have at least 3 or more year of patient teaching experience.
    • Current practitioners license in the state of Texas is required.
    • Registered Respiratory Therapist is required.
    • CPR certification is required Successfully complete the Certified Asthma Educator (TAEC) program. May be completed with in a year of hire date.
