    The Medical Imaging Technologist within the Division of Vascular and Interventional Radiology, under the direction of the Medical Director, the manager, and the physicians, has a key role in providing quality care to patients requiring a wide variety of procedural services. The VIR Technologist works collaboratively with all members of the team to create diagnostic images, engage in hands-on participation as a procedural assistant, and develop relationships with staff and patients to provide everyone with a safe and positive experience. VIR technologists practice and enforce the radiation safety measures in New York State Department of health code part 16 and support teaching and continued learning for themselves and others as technology evolves.

    PATIENT CARE

    • Educate patients in the purpose and type of test or procedure being performed.
    • Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care appropriate to the age and special characteristics of the patient.
    • Review the medical history of a patient (including medications, allergies, lab values, etc.) prior to starting a procedure.
    • Confirm that informed consent has been obtained before starting a procedure.
    • Demonstrate good customer service skills and provide quality care.
    • On call responsibilities with a 30 minute response time after initial contact for 3 services (Neuro, CCP, and Vascular surgery)

    PROCEDURAL ASSISTANCE

    • Verify that an order for a procedure has been obtained.
    • Set up and maintain a sterile tray and sterile environment appropriate for performance of procedures. The VIR tech
    • Administer contrast media with appropriate application of technical and positioning protocols.
    • Possess, use, and maintain knowledge of radiation protection and safety (ALARA guidelines).
    • Direct and perform a sterile prep of patients for various procedures
    • Assist physicians in all aspects of complex procedures in their assigned area (sterile scrub).
      • Demonstrate knowledge of the operation of all IR and OR hybrid procedure rooms. AMC has 5 IR rooms along with a hybrid OR room. Two of the rooms are bi-plane for neuro intervention cases. The procedure rooms at AMC are manufactured by three different companies (Phillips, GE, Siemens), and the VIR techs have to understand the operation of all rooms.
      • Demonstrate knowledge about and proficiency using each of the supplies used for the variety of IR procedures (>900 inventory items and >300 non-stock inventory items). VIR techs also have to be knowledgeable with the supplies used in the OR for AAA repair and bypass procedures (stent grafts).
      • Knowledge of the compatibility of each supply to ensure patient safety. Knowledge of complex cases including but not limited to the treatment of peripheral arterial disease (angiography, stent placement, Atherectomy), portal hypertension (transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunts - TIPS), cancer (Y-90 administration, chemoembolization, port placement), DVT and PE (thrombolysis, thrombectomy), trauma (embolization), aortic aneurysms (endograft placement and revision), dialysis interventions (fistulagrams, angioplasty, declotting, catheter placement), and neurointervention (stroke revascularization, aneurysm and AVM embolization).

    EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE

    • Maintain equipment as needed for a safe and accurate technical function and patient comfort and convenience (including cleaning equipment).
    • Refer equipment problems to the appropriate personnel for service (clinical engineering, etc.).
    • Enter patient data, charges, and supplies into the system accurately.
    • Assist in stocking adequate supply quantities in procedure rooms and rotate for daily use.
    • Actively support AMCH and the imaging department in maintaining proper accreditations.

    GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

    Practice in compliance with Hospital/department policy as well as New York state and accrediting agency standards.

    • Rely on experience and judgement to plan and accomplish goals.
    • Act as a mentor and preceptor to new staff and students.
    • Strives to grow and develop, creating a professional, progressive Imaging department with a positive atmosphere.
    • Involvement in research procedures/protocols.
    • Other duties may be assigned.
