Optical Engineer
Description
Leidos has a need for an Optical Engineer to support projects in a state-of-the-art government laboratory located on Kirtland AFB, NM that conducts experimental research for the Air Force Research Laboratory. The Optical Engineer will interface with government personnel on a daily basis to design, setup and perform optical and laser tests, including lasers for illuminator purposes, to achieve key project/program objectives and deliverables. The candidate will be responsible for entire projects spanning multiple technical disciplines, developing solutions to complex technical issues, and will employ ingenuity and creativity to develop new technical solutions and systems. The candidate will communicate and coordinate with Leidos, and government staff members and with subcontractors and vendors.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Design, setup, operate and record data on various optical experiments.
- Post-process test data and evaluate and present results, both in written format and with presentations.
- Operate a variety of optical tools which may include molecular beam epitaxy, plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition, reactive ion etching systems, Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, metal evaporators, wet etch and X-ray diffractometer tools
- Work well independently and in team environments.
Basic Qualifications:
- MS degree in a relevant engineering discipline and 10 or more years of hands-on experience in a laboratory environment.
- Experience with operating a variety of laboratory tools and equipment.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOD security clearance.
- Proficiency with vacuum, gas, and fluid systems.
- Possess a strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to independently diagnose and correct issues and problems with laboratory test setups in a timely manner.
- Proficiency with MS office products such as Word and Excel and PowerPoint
- Ability to understand and abide by Leidos and AFRL safety rules and regulations.
- Ability to lift and transport items weighing up to 25 lbs.
- Ability to work in a clean room for extended periods of time while using a respirator.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Possess an active DOD security clearance
- Experience working in government owned laboratories.
- Experience with AFRL and Leidos security and safety procedures and policies.

Pay Range:
Pay Range $101,400.00 - $183,300.00The Leidos pay range for this job level is a general guideline onlyand not a guarantee of compensation or salary. Additional factors considered in extending an offer include (but are not limited to) responsibilities of the job, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity, alignment with market data, applicable bargaining agreement (if any), or other law.
