    K-I Lumber and Building Materials, a Division of US LBM is Seeking a Senior Designer/ Design Checker for our Shelbyville, KY location.

    How You Will Spend Your Days as a Senior Designer/ Design Checker:
    • Responsible for and proficient in the creation of quotes and production design of multi-family, commercial, and residential roof trusses, floor truss systems, and wall panel while adhering to local building codes during the design process. Use of MiTek software to create structural designs and technically accurate layouts to complete the customer's order.
    • Proactively communicate with engineers, architects, contractors, framers, and etc. to obtain information and for possible changes/ corrections.
    • Make modifications, as needed, to produce quotes and production drawings.
    • Check completed designs for plan conformance and shop efficiency.
    • Respond to customer inquiries and needs. Answer questions from shipping, shop, sales, field and design personnel about setting and building components.
    • Read and understand blueprints and detailed technical drawings while maintaining job related files and notes including project status and electronic filing for others to access and for future reference.
    • Assist in procedural changes and continuous improvement within the department.
    • Adhere to company policies, including attendance, work rules, confidentiality, safety, housekeeping, and use of company property.
    • Put forth effort to increase profitability in areas including, but not limited to, truss design accuracy and optimization, seeking additional payment for changes in scope, billing accuracy, mitigating responsibility and profit loss in credit or no charge situations.
    • At times, possibly responsible for training other designers and apprentice designers regarding design and proper methods.
    • Complete plan reviews and determine special notes to append contracts for the purpose of communication of information and clarification of quotes for sales team to communicate with customers.
    • Assist customers as required, providing accurate, timely and thorough customer service.
    • Attend training as required to maintain current knowledge of design and relevant aspects.
    • If designer is located 'in house,' might perform job site inspections or field measurements.
    • Perform other duties as necessary.

    Senior Design/ Checker Requirements:
    • Minimum education required- High school or GED, may require an AAS in civil, architectural, structural or design related field, prefer Bachelor's degree. Applicable work experience may be substituted for education requirement.
    • Minimum experience required-5 years component design experience. Senior level truss experience is required. Senior level wall panel experience is a plus.
    • Potential candidate must be knowledgeable regarding component design and able to read and understand blueprints and detailed technical drawings. They must also be PC Literate with Microsoft Office products, proficient technical writing skills, excellent salesmanship and communication skills, use of MiTek design suite, AUTOCAD, Bluebeam Revu, ability to read technical drawings.
    • Physical demands include sitting for extended periods of time, standing and walking, bending or stooping, lifting up to 25 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally.
