    This position will work closely with the Patient Care Manager of the medical/surgical department and the other Assistant Nurse Manager covering two med/surg units with each unit having 32 private rooms.

      • 2100 is an acute care medical/surgical floor specializing in the post operative care of orthopedic, plastics, and urological procedures.
      • 3100 is an acute care medical/surgical floor specializing in the post operative care of colorectal, bariatric, and minimally invasive surgical procedures.

    Overview

    Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital offers highly specialized surgical and medical services in an intimate environment and is known for outstanding patient care. With 64 private patient rooms, 14 operating rooms and four intensive care unit rooms, the facility was designed to provide a comforting environment that is innovative, efficient and centered on the patient experience. The campus features a park-like setting with landscaping and a walking path that winds through the grounds and connects to Millennium Park.

    Med/Surg 2 West manages patients with orthopedic, GU, urological, and other general post-surgical conditions. Because of our patient acuity, we provide advanced training to maintain nurses at the highest level of functioning. The unit is led by a clinical manager and lead charge nurse. Additionally, the unit works in collaboration with a case manager, social worker, physical therapist, dietitian, and pharmacist. This multidisciplinary team works in conjunction with the physicians, nurses and patient care technicians to provide quality patient care.


    Preferred Qualifications

    Role Purpose

    Supports the operational functions of the department as related to: reporting, payroll, service recovery, staff communication, staff data collection and reporting, staff competencies and regulatory readiness compliance. Works collaboratively with other members of the leadership team to lead staff in clinical and service excellence.

    Responsibilities

    • May participate in the development of departmental staffing, revenue and/or expense budgets and having direct responsibility for adhering to those goals. This includes responding to changes in the business which may affect the ability to achieve the budget goals.
    • Prepare, analyze and develop action plan(s). Seek to identify trends in patient outcomes related to audits, reporting, & compliance. Ensure proper documentation, communication, followup accordingly.
    • Perform service recovery related to physician and bed management issues; support investigation and resolution of operational issues as required
    • Ensure staff meet regulatory, unit and BJC competency requirements; determine corrective plan of action if competencies are not met; follow up to ensure compliance. Ensure year round readiness through audits; determine individual or unit corrective plan if audit discloses readiness issues; follow up to ensure compliance with corrective plan. Own environmental plan.
    • Review staff hours worked vs scheduled hours and determine appropriate disposition if variation exists. Perform and approval daily payroll updated. Reconcile time cards, bonus tracking and coding approval. Prepare, coordinate and execute all staff communications; prepare huddle agendas and lead meeting. Determine staffing needs; make nursing assignments as well as assign overtime. Recommend effective annual increases. Interview staff for open positions; evaluate and conduct performance reviews as assigned; draft and issue corrective actions/coaching; follow up regarding any disciplinary action to determine compliance.
    • Manages individual(s) including but not limited to: onboarding and hiring, training, workload management & performance evaluations, conducting professional development plans as needed. Ensures that the productivity and actions of that group meet/support the overall operational goals of the department as established by department leadership.
