    The Environmental Health and Safety Specialist is an advocate of Colonial's Safety Culture, working under the leadership of the Environmental Manager or the Safety Manager. Performing in a combination of office and field environments, the successful candidate must be able to work independently on projects of moderate to high complexity with minimal supervision. Additionally, this position will be held with self-motivation, enthusiasm, and conviction while fostering a supportive relationship with operating departments and may involve managing others.

    The Environmental Health and Safety Specialist will also be responsible for the duties and knowledge in the following areas:

    • Research and interpretation of regulations and design of compliance methods.
    • Independent management of multiple safety or environmental programs, including management of compliance dates, liaising with federal and state regulators, managing project expenses, management of consultants, overseeing fieldwork and collecting field data, and preparing reports and presentations for upper management.
    • Management of other Safety and Risk Management Plans.
    • Prevention and management of environmental releases and other emergency responses.
    • Other duties and projects may be assigned.
    • General expertise in environmental compliance including Clean Air Act (CAA), Clean Water Act (CWA), Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA), Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA), Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA), Oil Pollution Act (OPA), Resource Conservation Act (RCRA), and Toxic Substance Control Act (TSCA).
    • General expertise in OSHA and MSHA compliance including MSHA Standards, OSHA General Industry Standards, OSHA Marine Terminals Standards, OSHA Construction Standards, OSHA Longshoring Standards, OSHA Recordkeeping Standards.
    • Specific expertise on AST Fire Protection, PSM/RMP, Industrial Hygiene, Security (MTSA and CFATS), EHS Training Development, etc.


    REQUIREMENTS:

    • Must have professional math and writing skills.
    • Must be technology-driven and proficient in the use of software, particularly Microsoft Office Suite.
    • Must meet the criteria for obtaining a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
    • Must have a valid driver's license and a good driving record. Overnight traveling may be required occasionally up to 25% of the time annually.
    • Must be able to climb stairs, walk at a fast pace, wear PPE up to Level B, and may occasionally lift or move up to 40 lbs.


    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    • BS of Applied Science degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Chemistry, or Environmental Engineering and a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.
    • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience managing safety or environmental programs.
    • ISO 45001 or 14001 auditor certification.
    • Professional certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (Certified Industrial Hygienist, Qualified Environmental Practitioner) or any other recognized association of environmental professionals.
    • Professional certification from the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (CSP, SMS, ASP, GSP, OHST, or STS).

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, climb ladders, stairs, and walk at a fast pace. The employee must be able to wear PPE up to Level B, and may occasionally lift or move up to 40 lbs.

    Overnight traveling may be required occasionally up to 25% annually, within the US southeast region.
