The Performance and Readiness Division under the Leidos Health Group has an opening for a Scientific Writer to support the Warfighter Performance Department within the Operational Readiness Directorate at the Naval Health Research Center (NHRC). The Warfighter Performance Departments research mission is to optimize human performance, recovery, resilience, and injury prevention.

The Scientific Writer will support the Warfighter Performance Department researchers in developing manuscripts, presentations, and briefings for scientific research programs.
Please note: Applicants should understand that this position is primarily a writing position for research projects designed and conducted by other government and contract investigators. Participation in research design and execution may be required on rare occasions.
Primary Responsibilities
Independently develop authored works such as technical and scientific publications, presentations, reports, book chapters, briefings, letters of support, and other documents from data collected through research projects and protocols, which meet requirements for acceptance at journals and conferences.
Collaborate with principal investigators, co-authors, research staff, administrative support, and other stakeholders for development and submission of authored works.
Write, edit, proofread, and provide writing support on authored works for submission for public affairs approval and public dissemination when applicable.
Research appropriate journals for submission such as those with high impact factor or those which reach specified audiences.
Research technical reference materials, gather relevant technical information, coordinate with stakeholders and other experts, and develop draft and final copies of authored works.
Ensure documents meet editorial and government specifications and adhere to high standards for technical and scientific quality, format, and style.
Manage required routing and approvals through government and contract approval systems, provide effective communication to all stakeholders, and ensure deliverable timelines are met.
Work independently on writing and editing tasking which make a direct impact on program objectives. Seek guidance from leadership and team in a timely fashion when applicable.
Set internal goals and milestone objectives to manage successful delivery of customer tasks and meet mission requirements.
Keep and maintain up-to-date tracking records of authored works displaying timelines for events such as submission, acceptance, and publication dates. Communicate regularly with PIs, Department Heads, and other stakeholders to share timeline updates.
Work effectively and cooperatively in a team comprised of military, government staff, contractors, academic and industry partners, and other internal and external stakeholders.
Use subject matter expertise and previous professional experience to provide guidance to researchers on effective written communication.
Maintain current on various styles guides such as APA and AMA formats, and scientific journal specifications.
Maintain strong proficiency in MS Office applications.
Aid in preparing periodic internal reports and status updates.
Perform other duties and responsibilities as required for the customer research mission.
Comply with all required Leidos and Government requirements and complete required certifications and trainings.
Support Leidos business development efforts such as contributing subject matter expertise.

Required Education, Experience and Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Masters degree from an accredited institution in biology, psychology, physiology, neuroscience, or a related scientific field
3 or more years of demonstrated scientific writing and editing experience through authorship on a minimum of 10 published relevant manuscripts in a peer-reviewed journal.
Hold and maintain current, advanced knowledge and understanding of scientific publication styles and journal requirements.
Excellent critical thinking with problem-solving skills and an ability to work cooperatively in a team setting. Flexibility in responding to changing demands, timelines, and priorities.
US Citizenship required. Must be able to obtain and maintain a SECRET government security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications
Doctoral degree from an accredited institution in biology, psychology, physiology, neuroscience, or a related scientific field
5 or more years of demonstrated scientific writing and editing experience
Experience as first author on 10 or more published manuscripts in a peer-reviewed journal
Experience working with a military population preferred

Pay Range:
Pay Range $61,750.00 - $111,625.00The Leidos pay range for this job level is a general guideline onlyand not a guarantee of compensation or salary. Additional factors considered in extending an offer include (but are not limited to) responsibilities of the job, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity, alignment with market data, applicable bargaining agreement (if any), or other law.
