    Primary Purpose

    Under the supervision of the Surgical and Burns Intensive Care Unit faculty/medical staff, the resident/fellow physician will provide cross-cover services to critically ill patients in the SICU and BICU. Duties performed must not interfere with primary training. Scope of work will be at an senior surgical resident level of care.

    Minimum Specifications

    Education

    - Must have a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy degree from an approved college of Medicine/Osteopathy.

    - Must be a post-graduate year (PGY)-3 resident or higher as outlined in the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

    - Must be in good academic standing with The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center's Surgery Residency Training Program.

    - Must have approval from the Medical Directors of the Surgical and Burn Intensive Care Unit to provide these services.

    Experience

    - None.

    Equivalent Education and/or Experience Certification/Registration/Licensure

    - Must have one of the following within 14 days of placement in job:

    - Must be currently licensed for the practice of medicine in the State of Texas or Hold a Physician in Training Permit by the Texas Medical Board

    Required Tests for Placement Skills or Special Abilities

    - Must be able to determine objectives, set priorities and establish and meet target dates.

    - Must be able to work effectively with other health care professionals and serve as a resource to the community.

    - Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skill in meeting age related and disabled patients' needs.

    - Must be able to demonstrate patient centered/patient valued behaviors.

    Responsibilities

    1. As assigned, provides high quality management of patient care under the supervision of appropriately privileged faculty/medical staff, participates in the care of SICU and BICU patients by medically managing patients, as necessary.

    2. Records health history, findings, treatment and recommendations accurately, clearly and thorough, consistent, and prompt manner in the patients Medical Record during each shift, and designates each note to be attested by the supervising faculty/medical staff physician.

    3. Trainees must be supervised by faculty/medical staff physician and is not to exceed the level of clinical activity and responsibility of the Trainees in his/her training program. Trainees may not function as independent practitioners.

    4. Trainees hours must be documented in MedHub and must comply with the written policies of the ACGME 80-hour work week, and the program regarding duty hours.

    5. Second Job must not interfere with the ability of the Trainees to achieve the goals and objectives of the primary educational program.

    6. Maintains a knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, laws, and guidelines, that impact the assigned area. Develops effective internal controls that promote adherence to applicable state/federal laws, and the program requirements of accreditation agencies and federal, state, and private health plans. Seeks advice and guidance as necessary to ensure proper understanding.
