Job Summary and Qualifications
Understands and satisfies the needs of the patient population appropriate to the age(s) served
Documentation of vital signs
Assists with care of the critically ill and stable patient in the Emergency Department
Observes and reports changes in patients condition promptly
Applies cardiac monitor, runs EKG strip; relays information to RN and physician
Performs 12 Lead EKGs
Provides basic life saving support in the event of cardiac and/or respiratory arrest (CPR
Performs peripheral intravenous punctures (including External Jugular and IO) and initiates IV fluids.
Obtains urine and other specimens
Assists physicians and nurses with special procedures such as insertion of chest tubes, arterial lines, central lines, swan ganz catheters, pacemakers, paracentesis and thoracentesis
Assists the Triage Nurse with triage as necessary
Performs phlebotomy
Applies oxygen per nasal cannula or mask to patients in respiratory distress under supervision of the physician or RN
Applies temporary splints or hare traction splints to fractures prior to x-ray, surgery, and/or admission
Applies cervical collars, arm slings, finger splints, finger guards, clavicle straps, posterior splints and rib belts
Assists physician with aspiration of fluid from joint
Removes casts when ordered by physician
Charting via Meditech system
Assists in emergency delivery of a baby
Instructs and fits patient for crutch walking
Performs care of body after death as directed by the RN according to the ER policy and procedure.
Transports patients to the nursing floor and monitored patients to PCU or ICU
Prepares, complies, and maintains a clean and safe patient care environment
Communicates via departments radio and telemetry systems
Maintains surgical asepsis while assisting with sterile procedures
Provides ACLS procedures as directed by physician or RN
The paramedic will not accept any telephone orders from physicians
Restocks departmental supplies and does unit cleaning
Maintains confidentiality of information
Member of the trauma team
Turn over rooms between patients
Answers EMS radio
Perform other duties as assigned to meet the needs of the department
Administers medications under Paramedic license and Vigo County EMS protocols
Attend Code of Conduct training course annually
Demonstrate an understanding of and adherence to HCAs Code of Conduct
Demonstrates conduct that is reflective of THRHs commitment to HCAs Code of Conduct
Understands and satisfies the needs of the patient population appropriate to the age of the patient served (adults, geriatric, adolescent, pediatric, and parents of neonates)
- Adheres to the Standards of Behavior for Terre Haute Regional Hospital as per the Customer Relations Policy
What qualifications you will need:
- Graduate of a Paramedic training program, current Paramedic License
- Requires successful completion of the BLS course recognized by the AHA.
- Certifications: ACLS and PALS certified and maintain certifications throughout employment with Terre Haute Regional Hospital (must be obtained within 6 months of hire)
- Above average communication skills in all forms
- Must maintain credentialing under Allied Health Practitioner described at Terre Haute Regional Hospital
- Must be State and/or Nationally Registered Paramedic
