    Position Purpose:

    Maintains all treatment equipment necessary to produce quality potable water.

    Primary Duties/Responsibilities:

    • Incumbent must have knowledge of water treatment procedures and the mechanical equipment necessary for water treatment as well as knowledge of electricity, electrical circuitry and industrial electricity and basic electronics.
    • The Mechanic maintains the water treatment equipment which involves periodic calibrations in chemical feed equipment, scheduled oil changes and lubrication of mechanical items, alignment checks of rotating equipment, wear and tolerance checks of pump impellers, seals, packing and bearings.
    • The incumbent determines the sources of equipment failure and determines the most effective solution to get it back in service as soon as possible. The Mechanic determines if a piece of equipment is worthy or repairs, the extent of the repair to be made and if the repair can be made on site of if the machinery needs factory attention. Due to the aging and obsolete equipment, the incumbent fabricates items no long available and updates aging equipment to use components that are readily available. In this capacity, he/she deals with hardware and plumbing suppliers, electrical suppliers, machine ships, bearing dealer, electric motor repair and sales, chemical feeder suppliers and oil distributors.
    • The Mechanic instructs the Operators in the proper operation of all treatment equipment and the proper way to perform the minor maintenance or adjustments necessary for proper plant maintenance.
    • He/she maintains a personal computer database file on every mechanical item at the treatment plant, booster stations, and wells. This data base keeps the mechanic aware of service due dates and provides a detailed history of equipment performance.

    Qualifications

    Education/Experience/Background:

    • To perform effectively in this position, an individual must have a high school education and additional technical training.

    Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

    • Knowledge of water treatment procedures and the mechanical equipment necessary for water treatment as well as knowledge of electricity, electrical circuitry and industrial electricity and basic electronics.

    Required Certification/Licenses/Training:

    • Drivers License.
