    Job Description:

    Our Nurses work in collaborative environments with strong interdisciplinary teams, focused on a patient centered care model in a richly diverse work space. Under the direction and general supervision of the Nurse Manager, the registered nurse utilizes evidence based practices in accordance with the State Nurse Practice Act, policies and procedures of the hospital and as directed by the medical staff. The registered nurse who through knowledge and ability uses the nursing process to develop a plan of care which includes standards of practice to meet the physical, emotional spiritual, cultural and educational needs of the patient and family.

    The role of the preoperative nurse during the preanesthesia phase of care will be to provide nursing care to patients and their designated support person on the day of surgery or procedure.

    Education and Professional Practice

    • Assesses the knowledge level of patient or designated support person.
    • Provides education regarding the expected psychosocial response, nutritional management, medication management, and pain and comfort management, wound management, and expected responses to the operation or procedure.
    • Actively involves the patient or designated support person in decisions affecting his/her/their perioperative plan of care and the rehabilitation process

    Preanesthesia patient Assessment and Monitoring

    • Performs pre-admission assessment including physical assessment and review of pertinent labs and relevant preoperative diagnostics testing.
    • Prepares and administers ordered medications safely using the 8-rights of safe medication administration.
    • Prepares for and monitors patient that has received procedural sedation.
    • Manages patients other co-morbid conditions as applicable.
    • Verifies that all the pre-operative preparation has been complete.
    • Verifies safe ride home.
    • Collaborates and effectively communicates with the entire perioperative team to ensure safe and timely transition to the operating room or procedural area.

    Postanesthesia Phase II Assessment, Monitoring, and Discharge Planning

    • Provides ongoing assessment and documentation of care.
    • Evaluates of patients discharge readiness based on discharge criteria.
    • Provides education and discharge instructions to patient and designated support person.
    • Ensures safe transportation home.
    • Provides safe transfer of care.

    Qualifications

    • Current unrestricted Connecticut RN License.
    • Graduate of an accredited nursing school (BSN preferred).
    • BLS certification by the American Heart Association prior to date of hire.
    • ACLS certification by the American Heart Association prior to date of hire for external candidates and within 90 days for internal candidates.
    • 1 year of recent medical surgical nursing experience.
