    Summary:
    Under the supervision of a Registered Physician performs a number of medical procedures including pre intra and post-operative management of patients assistance with surgical procedures wound care and others. Writes admission pre-operative and post-operative orders for patient care. This Physician Assistant position differs in job scheduling (works a longer standard workweek ES = extended shift) than the other PA positions.

    Responsibilities:
    Utilizes professional training in order to perform a number of medical procedures. All work is performed under the supervision of a physician but requires judgements and interpretations to complete. A PA is authorized to provide care to RIH patients as approved on their Allied Health Professional credentialing sheet on file in the Medical Staff office which may include:



    A.) Taking histories and administering physicals

    B.) Assisting in surgical procedures

    C.) Assisting in pre intra and post-operative management of patients

    D.) Performing thoracentesis

    E.) Perfuming tube thoracostomies

    F.) Starting IVs

    G.) Venous and arterial cut downs; subclavian veni-punctures

    H.) Placing a CVP Swan-Ganz catheters and arterial lines

    I.) Drawing blood (arterial and venous)

    J.) Wound care and management

    K.) Dictating discharge summaries

    L.) Ordering appropriate respiratory therapy

    M.) Airway management



    Requests social service physical therapy radiological medical/surgical consultations on behalf of and in the name of an attending doctor in the division and/or his/her resident in an individual case.



    Writes admission pre-operative and post-operative orders to include:



    A.) Standing orders on pre-op and post-op patients.

    B.) Antimicrobal and antiarrhythmic drugs

    C.) Cardiotonics-cathecholamines and cardiac glycosides.

    D.) Anticoagulants and/or protamine sulfate

    E.) Vitamins; intravenous fluids

    F.) Diet and/or tube feedings

    G.) Sedatives and analgesics

    H.) Hypnotics; antimetics; antispasmodics

    I.) Radiological and laboratory studies Cathartics



    Presents pertinent patient data at physicians conferences and consultations where the Physician Assistant is reviewed and advised in the area of patient care.

    Other information:
    BASIC KNOWLEDGE:



    Bachelors Degree in Biology and Graduate of Accredited Physician Assistant Program required.



    Masters degree and previous experience in an academic medical center environment preferred.



    Must be board certified by NCCPA.



    Current license (or eligible) as Physician Assistant in the State of Rhode Island; Federal DEA certificate; State Controlled Substance Certificate in RI and ACLS trained.



    An extremely high level of analytical ability in order to apply post-surgical training to the treatment of patients.



    Good interpersonal skills in order to deal effectively with patients families and other healthcare personnel.



    Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span with consideration of aging processes human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.





    EXPERIENCE:



    A minimum of two - three years of experience as a PA a pertinent related area is preferred.





    WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:



    Exposed to surgical procedures and patient care environments.



    Regularly experiences mental/visual fatigue from job pressures.
