Job Summary and Qualifications

As a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) Registered Nurse (RN), you are responsible for the patient care of children and adolescents with a wide-range of diagnosis, from common childhood diseases to life-threatening illnesses. You must use your nursing education and skills to monitor these patients and assist their families with transparent communication and emotional support.

What you will do in this role:

You will monitor and adjust specialized equipment used on patients, such as ventilators

You will provide age and culturally appropriate care to patients

You must collaborate effectively with the patient, the patients family/legal guardians and members of the healthcare team to achieve optimal patient outcomes

You will instruct patients and families regarding medications and treatment instructions

You will maintain and review patient records including posting tests and examination results

You will administer medications in accordance with physician orders

You will communicate with and educate parents on day-to-day operations as well as home-care procedures

What qualifications you may need:

Must be a graduate from an accredited school of Nursing: Associate's Degree in Nursing or higher is required

Must be licensed as a Registered Nurse in the state which you practice and/or hold an active Compact/Multi-State RN license

A current American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) Health Care Provider is required

Recent Pediatric or ICU experience preferred

The PICU unit at Summerville Medical Center is a 6 bed swing unit providing intensive and/or general pediatric care to children 0-18. The unit cares for patients with a blend of medical and surgical diagnoses. Common diagnoses include, but are not limited to, respiratory compromise with ventilatory support if needed, post surgical patients and pediatric gastrointestinal complications. The staffing mix includes Registered Nurses with therapeutic supportive services such as Respiratory Therapy, Pediatric Dietitian and Pediatric Pharmacist available as needed. All PICU beds are monitored beds.

Under general supervision, the Registered Nurse II provides individualized, goal-directed patient care to families and patients at the competent level utilizing the principles and practices of the nursing process; delivers safe and effective care and interacts with other members of the health care team to achieve desired results.
