At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our diverse team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role is part of the Space Systems Development (SSD) business unit. SSD develops next-generation concepts and systems to advance our future of living and working in space sustainably. This role would support the development of new chemistries to maintain air and water quality on a future crewed commercial space station.

As part of a hardworking team of diverse specialists, technicians, and engineers the candidate applies engineering techniques to design, develop, install, modify, analyze, repair and test life support chemicals, analytical equipment, test rigs, and development hardware. This includes development, release, and support of engineering artifacts across the development cycle to support hardware fabrication, assembly, verification, test and operations. Implements operating procedures, resolves system malfunctions, and provide technical information. Researches and analyzes customer design proposals, specifications, manuals, and other data to evaluate the feasibility, cost, and maintenance requirements of designs or applications. Specifies system components or directs modification of products to ensure conformance with engineering design and performance specifications. Investigates equipment failures and difficulties to diagnose faulty operation, and to make recommendations for maintenance activities.

Specifically, you will share in the team's impact on all aspects of designing, building, testing and flying Environmental Control and Life Support (ECLS) flight hardware.
  • The ECLS System is composed of the essential hardware to allow humans to safely inhabit space. ECLSS circulates air around the vehicle picking up carbon dioxide, humidity and trace contaminants to be scrubbed and provides oxygen for breathing. The internal cabin pressure is maintained and monitored. Clean drinking water is provided to the crew. The ECLS system also monitors air quality as well as emergencies such as rapid depressurization and fire and counteracts them.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Support and own the development, compounding, and/or synthesis of specialty chemicals for life support applications in a wet lab
  • Develop a new analytical test rig to characterize chemical performance
  • Operate analytical test equipment such as ion chromatography, inductively coupled plasma spectrometry (ICP) and x-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF), gas chromatography (GC) and Fourier Transform Inferred Spectroscopy (FTIR) to verify lot quality and performance, characterize fundamental chemical properties
  • Both lead and support testing of air revitalization and crew systems components in laboratory and integrated environments
  • Perform chemical modeling, calculations, and trades
  • Solve technical and program problems with the help of your team
  • Determine and manage schedule and budget for owned hardware
  • Work with suppliers and sub-contractors for components
  • Show system and component compliance to Blue and NASA technical requirements
  • Be the technical point of contact for your hardware
