Summary:

The Coding Quality Specialist requires superior knowledge of and skill in applying International Classification of Diseases and Procedures (ICD), and Current Procedural Terminology (CPT).
The coding quality specialist performs medical record coding and documentation reviews for:inpatient, observation, ambulatory surgery, emergency department, and other outpatient encounters; provides coding education based on review findings; acts as the coding and documentation resource for coding staff, leadership and CHST providers; assists in developing action plans in response to identified coding and documentation issues; provides ongoing training to coders, leadership, providers and other organizational staff; supports Clinical Documentation Improvement and Coding Leadership with research on coding/billing practices, statistical analysis and reporting as needed.

Responsibilities:
*Performs inpatient, observation, ambulatory surgery, emergency department, and other outpatient encounters coding/billing reviews and any follow up reviews to assure appropriate and compliant coding and billing is maintained. Assists in developing and implementing appropriate work plan if necessary.

*Performs initial coding and documentation training and orientation for new inpatient, observation, ambulatory surgery, emergency department, other outpatient coders and CHST providers

*Participates in activities related to annual code updates, including reviewing impact on inpatient, outpatient and professional coding and providers, system upgrade testing, developing training documents, providing training to coding staff, CHST providers and others as needed. Requires ability to research requirements of and act upon billing requirements of multiple payers.

How You’ll Be Successful:

·WORK EXPERIENCE

    • Minimum of five years progressive inpatient and outpatient coding or coding review experience with claims processing and data management responsibilities.
    • Knowledge of AHA and CMS coding guidelines, CPT/HCPCS and ICD-10-CM/PCS coding system, NCCI and LCD edits.
    • PC proficient, having a functional knowledge of facility EMR, encoder, and other support software.
    • Experience working academic teaching and pediatric facilities.


    EDUCATION
    * High school diploma or equivalent Req
    * Two-year associate degree or equivalent experience Pref
    * Four-year bachelor's degree or equivalent experience Pref

    LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
    * Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) Req
    * Clinical Documentation Improvement Practitioner (CDIP) or Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist (CCDS) Pref
