Summary:
Facilitates and obtains appropriate provider documentation for clinical conditions and/or procedures to support the appropriate APR-DRG assignment, severity of illness, expected risk of mortality, and complexity of care provided to patients. Provides ongoing clinical training to the CDI Team and supports CDI Director and Chief Health Information Management and Exchange Officer with statistical analysis and reporting as needed. Compiles information needed for CMC Recommended Clinical Criteria & Definitions - from draft through to completion and final approval from stakeholders throughout the organization. Acts as subject matter expert on Clinical Documentation Improvement, Case Mix Index, and multiple reimbursement systems (i.e. APR-DRG, Medicare).

Responsibilities:
* Demonstrates and applies in-depth knowledge of the conventions, rules, and guidelines of multiple classification systems, including ICD-10, diagnosis and procedures, and Current Procedural Terminology (CPT).
* Demonstrates and applies in-depth knowledge of disease process in multiple medical / surgical specialties.
* Completes initial concurrent reviews of patient records for specified patient populations to evaluate documentation, to assign working DRG, pertinent secondary diagnoses and procedures for accurate APR-DRG assignment, risk of mortality and severity of illness.
* Educates physicians and providers regarding the need for accurate and complete documentation in the health record.
* Partners with coding professionals to ensure accuracy of diagnostic and procedure data and completeness of supporting documentation to determine appropriate APR-DRG assignment.
* Queries physicians regarding missing, unclear or conflicting health record documentation.
* Provides ongoing education and support to the CDI Specialists regarding clinical indicators and criteria.
* Compiles Clinical Definitions & Criteria as needed. Oversees from draft status through final approval by organization stakeholders.
* Performs reporting analysis and supports CDI Director and Chief Health Information Management and Exchange Officer in compiling data for monthly reporting and presentations.
* Participate on workgroups and committees related to clinical documentation improvement as needed.

WORK EXPERIENCE
* At least 5 years Equivalent combination of education and/or experience in Health Information Management, Healthcare Administration, Healthcare Operations, Coding, Nursing, Case Management, or experience as a Physician. (Required)
* At least 7 years (Preferred)

EDUCATION
* Four-year Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience (Required)
* Graduate or professional work or advanced degree; or equivalent experience (Preferred)

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
* Licensed medical doctor (Preferred)
* Licensed RN, RRT, PT (Preferred)
* Registered Health Information Management Technician / Administrator (Preferred)
