Description

JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES:



  • Facilitates the flow of patients through the emergency care system, ensuring timely evaluation according to the health care needs of the patients.

  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills in the care of the emergency department patient under the direction of the Team Lead/Charge Nurse. Considers principles of emergency care while assisting the RN to formulate an appropriate plan of care for the patient.

  • Documentation is consistent, complete, thorough and legible.

  • Patient care is administered based on Hospital and Departmental specific standards of care and practice.

  • Involves the patient and/or significant other(s) in the patient’s care. Education/instruction are provided specific to the patient’s health care needs and age requirements.

  • Physician orders are carried out accurately in providing direct patient care within scope of practice. Assures that other departments are notified of orders and services are needed.

  • Licensed Paramedics and LPN may: administer ACLS drugs, SQ/IM and oral medications upon order of the physician or by ED protocol with the exception of administering: IV cardiac drips, thrombolytics, blood products, antibiotics or insulin.

  • May assist with code blue situation and traumas upon request of charge nurse or ED provider.

  • Notifies the RN/Team Lead and/or physician of changes of patient status as appropriate.

  • Considers age-related factors/limitations in the education of patients. Applies knowledge and principles of age-related factors appropriately in teaching situations.

  • Ensures patient’s right to privacy and confidentiality.

  • Assumes responsibility for the care of assigned patients. Patient care activities are organized and prioritized.

  • Contributes to the smooth functioning of the Unit by offering help to other staff members. Assists with patient care functions beyond those assigned within the Paramedic scope of practice.

  • Provides accurate and pertinent patient information reports to the RN and/or Team Lead, and to the oncoming shift to ensure continuity of care.

  • Performs Unit-specific responsibilities such as crash cart checks and cleaning of equipment and work areas

  • Performs venipuncture, lab draws, initiates an IV line, completes care interventions once competence has been determined.

  • Prepares patients for surgical and other invasive procedures.

  • Maintains competencies required by Hospital, Unit and position.

  • Maintains safe, effective working knowledge of equipment.

  • Maintains a working knowledge of the crash cart, emergency equipment and code procedures.

  • Performs basic life support (CPR) when necessary.

  • Takes into consideration the spiritual, psycho-social, cultural and religious preferences of the patient and family when participating in care.

  • Demonstrate understanding of and compliance to all safety protocols and procedures.

  • Organizes and maintains cleanliness of patient rooms and work environment.

  • Participates in yearly legal compliance training.

  • Explains departmental chain of command.



  • Explains purpose of Legal Compliance Hotline and utilizes if indicated.

  • Participates in departmental Legal Compliance plan.

  • Attend Orientation/Re-Orientation.



  • Completed Annual Department Competencies.



  • Recognizes and responds appropriately to ethical dilemmas; confers with appropriate resource personnel when making ethical decisions.


 


PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT:



  1. Promotes positive public relations for the department and the hospital.



  • Presents self in a professional manner; assists in community service programs as requested.



  • Adheres to dress code, appearance is neat and clean.

  • Wears ID badge while on duty, with name and face visible.

  • Comes to work on time and completes work within designated timeframes.

  • Maintains standards of professional society procedures and ethical behavior.

  • Works at maintaining a good rapport and a cooperative working relationship with physicians, departments, and staff.

  • Effectively communicates to personnel and encourages interactive departmental meetings and discussion.


 



  1. Attends required department meetings, in-services and educational programs.



  • Attends a minimum of 50% of staff meetings.

  • Attends a minimum of 50% of all in services.

  • Follows up to read or find information on missed meetings and in services.

  • Completes annual education within one month of EOD.

  • Provides education to staff on performance improvement. Ability to plan and organize orientation and in-service training for unit staff members. Participates in guidance and educational programs.


Completes annual review of mandatory requirements within one month from employment date.
