POSITION SUMMARY

The Cincinnati Art Museum has an opening for a full-time Assistant Director of Adult & Studio Programs. This position is scheduled for 35 hours per week and is salaried exempt.

The Assistant Director of Adult & Studio Programs has two significant areas of responsibility:

  • The development, implementation, and evaluation of public exhibition-related and studio programming (on-site and online) for all ages in the pursuit of lifelong learning through the exploration of art in the Art Museum.
  • Collaboration with the Assistant Director of Gallery & Accessibility Programs on the development, implementation, and evaluation of two large annual programs – Summer Camp and the 10x10 Teen Art Show, and the museum’s monthly CAM Kids Day program – as well as other programs that may arise.

This position works cooperatively with other museum colleagues and the community to develop engaging and accessible programming. This position is considered the museum’s key staff member for expertise related to current theories and practices in public programming.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Works with teammates in the Division of Learning & Interpretation to develop long-range goals and interim objectives for the Division of Learning & Interpretation. Establishes a shared and systematic approach to accomplishing the goals and objectives established for interpretive programming.
  • Works closely with the Assistant Director of Gallery Programs & Accessibility to create and maintain the interpretive public program schedule for all ages (0-100). Co-directs shared programs including Summer Camp, 10x10 Teen Art Expo, and CAM Kids Days.
  • Generates and manages interpretive programming designed to enhance both exhibitions and the visitor experience through a close working partnership with curators and members of the Division of Learning & Interpretation staff. Manages annual lecture series, CAM Presents series, and studio artmaking program series.
  • Undertakes on an on-going basis, special projects, exhibitions, and programming requiring inter-divisional and inter-departmental planning and development; programs characterized by uniqueness, community involvement, user value, visibility, and impact.
  • Develops and implements new and/or different approaches to interpretation including current learning theory and methodology, new technology and museum “best practices.”
  • Evaluates programs for all ages (0-100) including workshops, classes, lectures, gallery talks, and other activities on an ongoing basis. Seeks out varied methods of evaluation.
  • Formulates and monitors program budgets and carries out all purchasing and payment procedures in compliance with Art Museum policy.
  • Interfaces with all Art Museum divisions on Art Museum-wide events and planning with the intention of insuring program/event success. Works closely with the Marketing department on the promotion of programs and with Visitor Services department to maintain registration numbers.
  • Nurtures and supports ongoing community-based collaborations and actively seeks out new collaborations with other institutions and community organizations designed to create true partnerships and on-going commitments contributing to the overall quality of life in the Greater Cincinnati region.
  • Plans, organizes, implements, and evaluates programming in accordance with museum “best practices.”
  • Generates reports on program statistics, accomplishments, offering, direction, needs, budget, etc.
  • Works closely with the Director of Learning & Interpretation and the Philanthropy Division providing narrative content and statistics needed for grant proposal preparation and final reports.
  • Participates in national, regional, and statewide museum conferences, workshops and professional growth seminars related to interpretive programming, interpretation, outreach, and visitor needs.
  • Any other duties as assigned by the Director of Learning & Interpretation.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

  • A bachelor’s degree in art history, art education, or museum education is required.
  • Five years of related experience, especially in museum education, art education, public programming, and/or community-based collaborations.
  • Must have excellent and professional communication skills, both written and oral.
  • The ability to effectively present information and respond to visitors’ needs is central to this position.
  • Strong organizational skills; must be able to manage numerous projects simultaneously and to work independently and at a high level of productivity in a very busy office.
  • Cooperates in a teamwork fashion with all co-workers to accomplish goals.
