This assessment could be in the form of analysis of environments, transport of those environments through system enclosures, modeling the interaction or radiation with components and sensors, or testing of components and sensors. Typical systems and components include inertial navigation systems, inertial sensors (accelerometers and gyroscopes), MEMS devices, ASICs, fiber optics, and other electronic components. Job Description: Duties/Responsibilities
• Support engineering decisions based on radiation effects on overall system performance.
• Design harden and verify the performance of systems across multiple radiation effects, including dose rate, total ionizing dose (TID), neutron displacement damage (NDD), and single event effects (SEE).
• Support interdisciplinary teams to ensure that radiation hardening is maintained across the product lifecycle.
• Independently drive solutions to complex problems - develop requirements, propose ways forward when customer requirements are unclear or incomplete, and adapt appropriately to changes in requirements
• Sustained record of successful task leadership. Identifies risks and develops and executes mitigation strategies for them. • Demonstrated ability to lead medium-sized teams (5-10 people). Reliably aligns team towards program goals and builds trust within the team. • Subject Matter Expert (SME) able to perform advanced radiation effects analyses
• Able to provide insight and suggest design modifications based on analysis outcomes, and to apply analysis techniques across a range of technical challenges and disciplines
• Identify program/system-level technical risks and develop and execute mitigation strategies for them
• Develop, document, and teach best practices to less experienced engineers • Demonstrate strong organization, planning, and time management skills to achieve program goals
• Actively mentors. Recognizes strengths and weaknesses in others and provides thoughtful constructive feedback.
• Performs other related duties as needed Skills/Abilities
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively and openly with multi-disciplinary program team members. program leadership, and non-technical personnel.
• Excellent analytical skills to support modeling and analysis tasks.
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, especially with regard to planning critical test and analysis activities.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Team player able to work in a fast-paced environment with the ability to balance multiple competing tasks and demands.
• Solid understanding of radiation interactions with materials and devices. Education
Requires a Bachelor's in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or other relevant field. A Master's degree, or PhD is preferred. Experience
7-10 years Radiation Engineering or related experience. Additional Job Description: The Contested Environments System Analysis group is seeking a Principal Radiation Effects Engineer to support hostile and natural space radiation analysis in support of the Missile Defense Agency (MDA). He or she will be integrated in the MDA Survivability Knowledge Center (SvKC). The Principal Radiation Effects Engineer will serve as an interface between Draper and the MDA, and so must have significant experience managing customer interactions. Candidates are also expected to have experience with radiation environment definition, effects of radiation on electronic systems, and probability of survival analysis. The candidate will be expected to work effectively across multiple teams including engineers from various locations and disciplines. A strong understanding of the Systems Engineering process, electrical design, and missile / interceptor analysis is required for this position. The candidate must be on-site at least 50% of the time at the Missile Defense Agency, Huntsville, AL, and will be based out of Draper's Huntsville, AL Campus he ideal candidate will have a BS and 10+ years of experience, M.S. and 7+ years of experience or a PhD and 5+ years of experience with a degree in electrical engineering, nuclear engineering, physics, or a related field. Required skills include: * Significant experience evaluating electronic systems for radiation effects vulnerabilities, including single event effects and dose rate effects
* Experience with radiation hardening design, testing, and qualification, with familiarity with part-level and board-level radiation testing in multiple environments, including total ionizing dose, single event effects, and dose rate testing
* Experience with defining radiation environments based on trajectory and engagement scenarios
* Ability to generate Failure Mode Effects Criticality Analysis (FMECA) and Single Event Effects Criticality Analysis (SEECA) for existing designs
Preferred: * Familiarity with radiation transport tools such as MCNP
* Familiarity with environment definition tools such as ASSIST, FAB4DA, and SPIET-D
