Job Description:
Reporting to the Engineering Manager and working closely with other key stakeholders, the GLE Senior Mechanical Engineer will lead and collaborate with the engineering staff to develop design specifications, conceptualize design concepts based on project needs, work with design engineers to complete detailed designs, complete and document design calculations, provide procurement support, and generate other drawings and design documentation as required to support manufacturing, assembly and testing of laser enrichment systems. Senior Mechanical Engineers will perform and verify analyses on parts and components which may include stress, strain, fracture mechanics, heat transfer, thermal and dynamic loads, and vibrational analysis. The Senior Mechanical Engineer will operate in a team environment and collaborate with other engineering disciplines to ensure successful on time delivery of engineering deliverables that meet or exceed project or business needs. NOTE: This role may be filled at lower level depending on the applicant’s qualifications and experience. NOTE: This role is subject to the incumbent’s ability to hold and maintain an NRC Q-clearance, as well as their ongoing ability to maintain nuclear site access. Roles and Responsibilities:
• Requires interface with business project managers, technical project engineers, various engineering disciplines, and other business functions and partners.
• Conceptualize and develop new products that support project objectives. • Review existing products and propose design modifications to improve existing product functionality
• Work with engineers to complete and verify design calculations
• Work with design engineers to complete detailed designs
• Review/Verify detailed drawings and specifications to support manufacturing.
• Provide well written, well organized documented engineering analyses to assure design adequacy.
• Oversee design reviews and production readiness reviews.
• Address emergent issues in a timely manner
• Work closely with sourcing and manufacturing to support cost reduction activities.
• Design test procedures and perform testing to validate component and assembly adequacy.
• Develop procedures and work to improve engineering productivity.
• Apply engineering fundamentals and 1st order engineering principles to establish and/or confirm expected performance.
• Define scope, review results, and discuss technical risks.
• Work with the Engineering Manager to establish an effective work plan, including time estimates, schedule estimates, requirements and work processes.
• Perform other duties assigned. Basic Qualifications:
• Active DOE/NRC Q-clearance or equivalent (DOD Top Secret) or ability to obtain, which requires US Citizenship.
• The required work location for this role is at the GLE Headquarters in Wilmington, NC (relocation assistance provided).
• Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or other engineering field (Advanced Degree preferred).
• Nuclear Industry knowledge / experience preferred.
• Demonstrated problem solving ability and ability to perform complex engineering analyses resulting in thorough and complete documentation. • Strong communication skills and capable of articulating specific technical topics or assignments. • Knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, vibration analysis, heat transfer, Finite Element Analysis, statistics and drafting practices (including geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, and CAD). • Ability to work effectively within a highly collaborative environment. • A self-starter willing to take initiative.
• Experience working in classified and/or highly regulated environments preferred.
