Machine Shop Supervisor Requirements & Qualifications

Must Haves:

  • Minimum 5 years of machining and CNC programming experience
  • Proven experience programming and setting up CNC lathes
  • Strong experience operating manual lathes and mills
  • Ability to supervise shop floor operations and lead production teams
  • Experience working with OEMs and tooling suppliers to source and purchase tooling
  • Strong understanding of tooling practices and machining processes
  • Experience using precision measuring equipment including calipers and gauges
  • Ability to troubleshoot production and machining issues efficiently
  • Experience maintaining production schedules and minimizing downtime
  • Ability to collaborate with engineering teams on fixtures, tooling, and process improvements
  • Strong communication and leadership skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced manufacturing environment while maintaining quality standards


Day-to-Day Responsibilities:

  • Program and set up Mazak CNC lathes for production operators
  • Support fixture design and tooling setup in collaboration with engineering teams
  • Oversee daily production flow and ensure manufacturing targets are met
  • Perform quality inspections to verify finished products meet specifications
  • Optimize machine setups and machining processes for efficiency and productivity
  • Monitor shop safety, cleanliness, and organization standards
  • Coordinate inventory levels for raw materials and finished goods
  • Address machining, tooling, and production issues in real time to reduce downtime

Machine Shop Supervisor Preferred Background & Skills

  • Experience programming Mazatrol T Plus CNC controllers
  • Experience programming Mazatrol SmoothG CNC controllers
  • CAD/CAM programming experience
  • Experience optimizing toolpaths for improved tool life and cycle times
  • Experience operating forklifts, pallet jacks, overhead cranes, and material handling equipment
  • Previous leadership experience in a manufacturing or machine shop environment
  • Experience supporting continuous improvement initiatives in production settings
