Environmental Health and Safety Manager Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Safety, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
- 5–10+ years of environmental, health, and safety experience in chemical manufacturing or heavy industry.
- Strong knowledge and hands-on experience with Process Safety Management (PSM), including OSHA PSM standard (29 CFR 1910.119).
- Expertise in developing and maintaining safety, environmental, and industrial hygiene programs.
- Demonstrated ability to lead safety initiatives, regulatory compliance, and incident investigation processes.
Environmental Health and Safety Manager Preferred Background & Skills
- Advanced knowledge of PHA methodologies (HAZOP, What-If, FMEA, Checklist).
- Experience with Management of Change (MOC) systems and Mechanical Integrity (MI) programs.
- Strong technical background in root cause analysis (RCA, TapRooT, 5 Whys, Fishbone).
- Ability to analyze, track, and improve safety and environmental performance metrics.
- Effective communication and team leadership skills.
Environmental Health and Safety Manager Day-to-Day Responsibilities
- Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, and all applicable local, state, and federal regulations.
- Maintain permits, documentation, and lead regulatory reporting for chemical handling, emissions, and waste.
- Oversee the development and implementation of sitewide safety, environmental, and emergency preparedness programs.
- Lead risk assessments, hazard analyses, safety audits, and incident investigations.
- Supervise and mentor EHS staff, providing guidance to leadership and cross-functional teams.
- Monitor compliance with SPCC and SWPPP programs, and implement pollution prevention and sustainability initiatives.
- Coordinate medical surveillance, occupational health, and industrial hygiene programs.
- Develop and deliver EH&S training programs and lead safety committees and emergency drills.
