Our client is seeking a Government Relations Director to lead their agency-wide strategy across federal, state, and local government while overseeing legislative advocacy, lobbying efforts, and stakeholder engagement.

 

Government Relations Director Responsibilities:

  • Lead federal, state, and local government relations strategy, ensuring agency priorities are proactively advanced and clearly represented.
  • Advise the Board of Trustees and Executive Director on legislative issues, providing detailed analysis of proposed policies and strategic recommendations.
  • Oversee all lobbying activities and manage relationships with lobbyists, elected officials, government agencies, and key community partners.
  • Develop and execute comprehensive government relations plans, including communication strategies aligned with the organization’s goals.
  • Maintain high visibility with policymakers and regional partners, cultivating strong, trusted relationships across all levels of government.
  • Manage, mentor, and develop the Government Relations team (two FTEs), ensuring effective coordination and accountability.

 Government Relations Director Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration, Public Policy, Political Science, or a related field; advanced understanding of public policy preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in government relations, public policy, community affairs, or related fields.
  • Proven ability to analyze complex legislative issues and deliver clear, strategic recommendations to senior leadership.
  • Demonstrated leadership, including managing staff, supporting high-level initiatives, and driving strategic outcomes.
  • Exceptional political acumen, relationship-building skills, and the ability to navigate sensitive issues with diplomacy and tact.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to craft clear messaging and engage diverse internal and external stakeholders.
