A tool and die maker machinist plays a critical role in manufacturing by producing tools, dies, and fixtures used in the production of various products. Job Summary:


As a tool and die maker machinist, you will be responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining machine tools to produce precision parts, tools and fixtures. Your work will involve interpreting blueprints, sketches, and engineering specifications to determine the sequence of operations needed to fabricate parts. You will work with a variety of metals and materials to create components used in manufacturing processes.


Responsibilities:



  1. Reading Blueprints and Specifications:

    1. Interpret technical drawings and blueprints to understand the design requirements.

    2. Determine the sequence of operations and the required tooling.



  2. Setting Up and Operating Machines:

    1. Set up and operate machine tools such as VTLs, horizontal boring mills, milling machines, lathes and grinders.

    2. Use precision measuring instruments to ensure accurate machining.



  3. Tool and Die Making:

    1. Build and repair cutting tools, jigs, fixtures, gauges, and dies.

    2. Perform precision grinding, fitting, and assembly of components.



  4. Quality Control:

    1. Inspect finished parts, tools and fixtures for accuracy and quality.

    2. Make necessary adjustments to meet specifications.



  5. Troubleshooting and Maintenance:

    1. Identify and resolve issues with machine tools and equipment.

    2. Perform routine maintenance on machines to ensure optimal performance.



  6. Collaboration:

    1. Coordinate with engineers, designers, and other machinists to discuss projects and resolve design issues.

    2. Work closely with production teams to ensure tools and fixtures meet manufacturing requirements.




Skills and Qualifications:



  • Proven experience as a tool and die maker or a manual machinist in a manufacturing environment.

  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting technical drawings and blueprints.

  • Extensive knowledge of machine tools and equipment including lathes, horizontal and vertical mills, vertical turret lathes and horizontal boring mills.

  • Strong understanding of metal properties and machining techniques.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.


Education and Training:



  • High school diploma or equivalent; vocational or technical training in machining or tool and die making is preferred.

  • Apprenticeship or journeyman certification in tool and die making or a related field is advantageous.
