Surgical Technologists are an active member of the nursing team working collaboratively in the Operating Room and procedural area, functions under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse and is responsible for assisting the RN in carrying out the individual plan of care based under the RN assessment.

*Title: *Certified Surgical Technologist or First Assist

*Location: *Maury Regional Medical Center

*Qualifications/ Certifications required*
* Certified by the Association of Surgical Technologists, The National Board of Surgical Technology, the Surgical Assisting Liaison Council Certificate of Surgical Technology, or the National Center for Competency Testing is required.
* Current CPR certification

*Duties*
* Assist in moving and positioning patients. Placement of pneumatic tourniquet
* Assist with resuscitation of patient during cardiac arrest or other life threatening events in the operating room
* Assists in turnover, preparing the operating room and assigned support duties during surgical procedure. Assist team members in selection and preparing routine supplies instruments, and equipment for surgical procedures. Checks all instruments for workability prior to usage, displaying knowledge of instrument and content of set.
* Close wound layers per surgeon's directive, apply wound dressings
* Demonstrates skill and consideration for the safety and welfare of the patient in performing surgical assistant duties
* Determines specific equipment and instruments needed per procedure and assist in procuring. Assists in returning equipment and instruments to proper locations.
* Drape patient within surgeon's guidelines. Provide retraction of tissue and organs for optimal visualization with regard to tissue type and appropriate retraction instruments a.1.d/or technique. Assist in maintaining hemostasis by direct pressure, use and application of appropriate surgical instrument for the task, placement of ties, placement of suture ligatures, application of chemical hemostatic agents, or other measures as directed by surgeon.
* Maintains and performs a count of sponges, sharps and instruments according to departmental policies and procedures. Handles specimens in accordance departmental policies
* Participate in the time out process. Maintain integrity of sterile field.
* Use electro cautery, mono and bipolar as directed by the surgeon. Clamp, ligate, and cut tissue per surgeon's directive.
