MCS is hiring for a Fiber Cable Technician in Norfolk, VA. This is a full-time, permanent position with benefits. The Fiber Cable Technician must demonstrate their flexibility by providing telecom infrastructure support to multiple locations including Navel Station Norfolk (NAVSTA) and Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek (JEBLC). The Fiber Cable Technician will require good communication skills and the ability to work well in a team setting. It is important that candidates keep abreast of industry trends and developments, as well as applicable Government regulations. Typical duties include: • Conducting quarterly preventative maintenance inspections on over 100 risers located at NAVSTA and JEBLC. • Testing, inspecting, and cleaning fiber infrastructure, pier risers and enclosures once every 4 months, following the NCTAMS LANT Pier Fiber Optic Riser Maintenance Checklist. • Inspecting all fiber optic patch panels associated with the pier’s infrastructure. • Verify the presence of dust covers on unused fiber ports. • Cleaning bulkhead connection points using industry-standard fiber cleaners. • Performing Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) verification testing on cleaned fiber to ensure it meets industry specifications. • Providing detailed test reports to the Base Communications Office Infrastructure Manager, site Point of Contact (POC), or Contracting Officer's Representative (COR). Certification Requirements: BICSI (Desired) Experience Requirements: • 5+ years’ experience in fiber optic cable testing, troubleshooting, and repair, ideally in a telecommunications or network infrastructure setting. • Proficiency in using fiber optic testing equipment such as OTDRs, light meters, and fusion splicers. • Strong attention to detail and ability to interpret test results accurately. • Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks effectively to meet maintenance schedules. • Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose and resolve fiber network issues efficiently.
