General Summary of Position
MedStar Health is currently seeking a CPC Coding Specialist with at least 3 years of coding experience to join our MedStar Ambulatory Surgery Center team! This is a full time, Monday-Friday position, with a hybrid schedule after the successful completion of the 90-day probationary period (training period is full time on-site). Hybrid schedule includes working remotely on Mondays & Fridays and working on-site Tuesday - Thursday. Business office is located in Elkridge, Maryland.
The Coding Specialist II will code and abstract primarily Ambulatory Surgery records and other outpatient records using ICD-10-CM, CPT-4 and other applicable patient classification schemes.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Reviews medical record documentation to identify diagnoses and procedures. Assigns correct diagnostic, procedural codes, and appropriate modifiers using standard guidelines and automated encoding software maintaining departmental accuracy standards.Maintains implant log and properly identifies implants and charge for accurate and timely claim submission.
Contacts physician when conflicting or ambiguous information appears in the medical record. Adheres to the MedStar Coding Query Policy and procedure.Performs timely and accurate charge entry into billing system. Reconciles charges and performs batch processing. Submits claims
and works rejects for claims submission. Resubmits/refiles and appeals rejected claims, as necessary.Adheres to contractual requirements of Medicare, Medicaid, and managed care plans.
Abstracts and ensures accuracy of diagnoses, procedure, patient demographics, and other required data elements.Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.Adheres to all compliance regulations and maintains annual compliance education.Maintains continuing education and seeks ongoing education to improve job performance. Maintains credentials as required for job classification.Meets established Quality standards as defined by policies.
Minimum Qualifications
Education- High School Diploma or GED required
- Associate degree and/or Bachelor's degree preferred or
- Medical Coding Certification with successful completion of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and coding courses in ICD-10-CM and CPT-4 required
Experience- 3 years ASC (Ambulatory Surgery) coding experience and experience with clinical information systems (3M grouper, electronic medical records, computer assisted coding, coding books) required
Licenses and Certifications- Certified Professional Coder (CPC) required
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Verbal and written communication skills.

This position has a hiring range of $23.19 - $38.49
