Job Summary

A trained non-medical professional who provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to the client before, during and shortly after childbirth to help them achieve the healthiest, most satisfying experience possible. Typically reports to Women’s and Children’s Service Line Program Director.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: High School diploma or GED

Licenses/Certifications: 

  • Certification as a Doula required

Experience / Knowledge / Skills:

  • One (1) year experience working in a community as a doula required; two (2) years’ experience working in a community as a doula preferred
  • Knows and understands specific health issues related to pregnancy
  • Effective oral and written communication skills

?Principal Accountabilities

  • Provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to their client before, during and shortly after childbirth.
  • Provides Continuous support in labor such as position ideas for comfort and labor progression, hands-on comfort measures like comforting touch, counter pressure, and breathing techniques.
  • Advocates on behalf of the patient and family.
  • Nurture, support and offer expert guidance for families during their pregnancy, birth and the early postpartum time.
  • Provides individually tailored and client-centered care and advocacy.
  • Communicates in an effective and professional manner and maintains positive relationships with physicians, nursing staff, and nurse navigators.
  • Ensures safe care to patients, staff and visitors; adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications including time management, supply management, productivity and quality of service.
  • Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; supports department-based goals that contribute to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor and resource to less experienced staff.
  • Demonstrates commitment to caring for every member of our community by creating compassionate and personalized experiences. Models Memorial Hermann’s service standards of providing safe, caring, personalized and efficient experiences to patients and our workforce.
