SUMMARY: Operating under the Executive Director and working with the technology infrastructure team this position oversees Engineer Infrastructure-related solutions planning and overseeing the design, implementation, and documentation of the D51 Local Area Network (LAN) and Wide Area Networks (WAN). Responsibilities encompass effective provisioning, installation/configuration, operation, and maintenance of network hardware and software and related technical infrastructure. Employee utilizes software and hardware diagnostic tools to identify, diagnose and repair complex problems leading projects focused on smoothing the transition of projects from development to production by performing operations activities within the project life-cycle. Other duties involve assisting project teams with technical issues in the Initiation and Planning phases of our standard Project Management Methodology.

Other areas of responsibility for this position include developing network documentation with diagrams, documenting Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Documentation must be sufficient to allow business continuity by detailing the network infrastructure to ensure transition and backup personnel are able to manage in the absence of this individual. Employee also conducts technical research and development to enable continuing innovation within the infrastructure, and ensures that system hardware, operating systems, software systems, and related procedures adhere to organizational values and the district s instructional mission. As a Senior staff position within the Technology Department this employee holds a high expectation for professionalism and leadership during co-worker, end-user and vendor interactions.

Job Responsibility Descriptions
  1. This employee oversees Engineer Infrastructure-related solutions for a variety of projects and department operational needs. The position plans and oversees the design, implementation, and documentation of the Local Area Network (LAN) and Wide Area Network (WAN). Primary duties include the monitoring the Wireless infrastructure (WLAN) and Data Center infrastructure, tracking the system build-out status and specifications / configurations for: *firewalls *switches *core routers *VPN concentrators *content switches *wireless access points (WAP) core routers and *web management devices.

Other responsibilities include providing for other stand-alone systems and network engineering tasks, as requested.This may include researching the need and availability of appropriate hardware for project and production support; and configuring installations of new network hardware in support of the District s Strategic Initiatives. Related duties include on-going supports and managing network reporting tools and software; monitoring a spectrum of performance analysis, troubleshooting network software and hardware problems.
  1. Manages the utilization of hardware and software tools to monitor the health of the District s internet connection, Wide-area-Network, and various Local-area-Networks, Wireless and data Center infrastructures, and is often the decision maker regarding best-practices. The Sr. Engineer oversees vendor patches and identified fixes to problems, correcting issues and problems as needed. Employee utilizes software and hardware diagnostic tools to identify, diagnose and repair complex problems and factors affecting network performance. Employee directs and performs all necessary information system audits to ensure service level expectations are sustained, systems are optimized and information systems are not compromised.
  1. Contributes to and maintains the District s technology system standards including developing network documentation with diagrams, and documenting Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Documentation must be sufficient to allow business continuity by detailing the network infrastructure to ensure transition and backup personnel are able to manage in the absence of this individual. Delivering District technology standards include researching and recommending innovative, and where possible automated approaches for system administration tasks. Employee as possible will identify approaches that leverage our resources and provide economies of scale, phased implementations, and maintenance plans.
  1. Conducts daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware switching and routing resources, systems and key processes, reviewing system and application logs. Employee provides Tier III/other support per request from various constituencies, investigating and troubleshooting these escalated and complex issues. Repair and recover from infrastructure failures and adding new services as necessary. Employee also applies OS/Firmware patches and upgrades on a regular basis, including the upgrade of related administrative tools and utilities. Duties require coordination and communicating with impacted constituencies. Maintains data center network environmental and monitoring equipment. Occasionally the Sr. Engineer provides team leadership in the activities of Tier I and/or II staff members.
  1. Other duties involve assisting project teams with technical issues in the Initiation and Planning phases of our standard Project Management Methodology. These activities include the definition of needs, benefits, and technical strategy; research & development within the project life-cycle; technical analysis and design; and support of operations staff in executing, testing and rolling-out the solutions. The Sr. Engineer configures and/or adds new services as necessary or requested and including upgrading and configuring system software that supports infrastructure applications or Asset Management applications per project or operational needs.
  1. Performs periodic performance reporting to support capacity planning, ongoing performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimization as required. These responsibilities may include developing technical project budgets with system and equipment specifications, seeking quotes, and providing input to cost/benefit analysis for planning purchases.

AVAILABILITY: This position has an expectation for schedule accommodations that include weekends, and before or after regular hours. Engineers may be called out on service or emergency matters on an as needed basis. In addition, many projects or technology driven initiatives will require work during non-business hours. Employee strives to balance these irregular commitments and schedules in conjunction with all other duties, obligations, and personal life.

EDUCATION AND RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of Bachelor s degree in Computer Science or related field required*;
  • Minimum of three years experience in telecommunications, microcomputers, data cabling and management of large information systems;
  • Minimum of two years experience in system administration of an enterprise system and project management;
  • Preference given for recent experience with Microsoft Server (2012 or newer);
  • Desirable skills include advanced telecommunications systems, information technology, telecommunications media and electronics, software skills, low voltage cabling design and implementation, networking, and advanced microcomputer skills.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS or CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Criminal background check required for hire;
  • Valid Colorado driver s license or identification required;
  • Preference given for CCNA, CWNA, Comp-TIA Network + certification;
  • Preference given for Certification in Cold Fusion or other scripting languages, SQL Server DBA, Microsoft Visual Studio;
  • Attend and successfully complete all staff development training as required by state law or as directed by Supervisor.

TECNOLOGY MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT KNOWLEDGE: This senior level Technology position requires an expertise level of skills and knowledge in all of the following:

  • Web environments and frameworks including Node.JS, ASP.Net, and Bootstrap Svelte required for hire.
  • Configuring switches, routers, hubs, servers, cables, racks, firewalls, LAN, WAN, TCP/IP, DNS, UDP, latency, VoIP, QoS.
  • Layer 3 routing with a high understanding of RIP, IGRP, EIGRP, and BGP as well as Inter-VLAN routing.
  • Programming, markup languages (Cold Fusion, JavaScript, CSS, HTML); operating systems (Windows, Windows Server); databases (SQL Queries, SQL Server and SQL Server tools, such as SSIS and SSRS) and other commercial software including Visual Studio and PowerShell;
  • Microsoft Office and G-Suite products.
