Medical Lab Scientist II 40 hours
GENERAL SUMMARY: Under minimal supervision and according to established procedures, performs all
pre-transfusion testing on all blood and blood components. Performs antibody identification, antibody elutions, prenatal testing and various special procedures. Ensures quality and safe delivery of care to patients of all ages.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:
1. TECHNICAL:
Performs ABO, Rh, antibody screen, antibody identification, compatibility testing and special procedures on patients of all ages. Interprets patterns to determine blood types and compatibility status.
2. COMMUNICATION:
Communicates with physicians, staff nurses, operating room personnel, phlebotomists, physicians’ offices, other laboratories, other hospital blood banks, blood suppliers, approved hospital vendors and patients’ families, if applicable.
3. QC/QA:
Performs all QC according to the established schedule. Responsible for completion of intensive QA program which meets FDA, CAP and hospital requirements. The program includes procedure audits, proficiency testing, required reading assignments and posted material for CEU’s. Performs proficiency surveys on rotation basis. Adheres to safety regulations and completes hospital on-line assigned competencies
4. DOCUMENTATION:
The Blood Bank Tech is responsible for recording in log book or computer all specimens that are received in the lab, results of all tests as they are observed, all components prepared, all units of blood components received, issued or shipped to other facilities, all QC results, and all QA issues or complaints.
5. SPECIAL DUTIES:
Performs phenotyping on donor blood. Evaluates new procedures and new equipment. Performs a wide variety of special procedures for infant transfusions, transfusion of Cancer Care Center patients and prenatal patients. Prepares special blood components as needed for Plasma-exchange procedures and for surgical procedures. In the absence of the manager, is responsible for the daily schedule and work flow.

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND OTHER JOB REQUIREMENTS:
· The level of knowledge equivalent to that ordinarily acquired through completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology.
· At least two years of Blood Banking experience
· High level of accuracy in making decisions related to compatibility of blood.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
· Frequent walking, standing, bending, and stooping. Constant exposure to blood.
· Constant concentrated effort is required during testing performed for transfusion.
