The Lead Registered Dietitian provides clinical nutrition and treatment plans consistent with the philosophy and objectives of Walden Behavioral Care. The successful candidate is responsible for nutrition assessments, individual and group nutritional therapy, formulating meal plan, weight trend recommendations, active participation in inter-professional collaborative practice with members of the treatment team, and coordinating transitions across levels of care. In addition to patient care responsibilities, the Lead Registered Dietitian is responsible for a variety of professional supervision and administrative responsibilities including the planning and coordination of staffing coverage for the program, coordination with food service, facilitating biweekly RD meetings, and representation on company-wide committees, etc.

Responsibilities Include::

PATIENT CARE (approximately 50% effort)

  • Carries a caseload averaging six patients with the ability to flex up or down depending on the needs of the program and the nutrition team
  • Meets with patients two times per week to provide individualized nutrition education
  • Attends adult and adolescent rounds weekly to present on current case load and to collaborate with the multidisciplinary team on treatment plans and interventions
  • Models collaborative spirit within interprofessional practice and treatment planning
  • Coordinates with outpatient and collateral contacts as needed per the treatment plan

ADMINISTRATIVE (approximately 20% effort)

  • Works with the Director of Clinical Nutrition to create cohesion in the inpatient and residential programs to remain consistent with the department’s nutrition philosophy
  • Assists the Director of Clinical Nutrition in determining staffing needs and delegating coverage when needed
  • Delegates case assignments to RD team and oversees caseload management
  • Actively participates in case conferences and daily rounds
  • Performs quarterly chart audits to review clinical integrity and compliance
  • Participates in the development and revision of nutrition education curriculum, as assigned
  • Develops and updates nutrition protocols, as assigned
  • Audits and implements nutrition-related dining room protocols (supplement protocol, food safety practices, follow up on errors in entry and tray errors), etc.
  • Actively represents Nutrition on company-wide committees by attending regular meetings and completing independent work
  • Trains other disciplines on the role of the Registered Dietitian to enhance interprofessional practice
  • Participates in biweekly RD journal club supervision providing an open discussion on up-to-date research within nutrition and dietetics
  • Attends leadership meetings, as appropriate
  • Independently completes continuing education in the form of webinars, conferences, and trainings as it relates to job specifications and maintenance of the RD credential

SUPERVISION (approximately 20% effort)

  • Oversees onboarding for new employees in the Nutrition department
  • Supervises Diet Aides & Dietetic Technicians
    • Orients new Diet Technician during onboarding
    • Completes 90-day competency packet and review
    • Trains on meal room protocols, DFM (Dietary Food Management) ticket entry, meal support, etc.
    • Meets 1:1 at minimum once every other week for guidance in clinical practice
  • Supervises Dietetic Interns
    • Screens applicants and responds in a timely manner to requests for clinical training
    • Collaborates with HR for background checks, COVID testing, etc.
    • Coordinates scheduling with Program Director and Intern
    • Creates a comprehensive training schedule in accordance with program-specific clinical competencies
    • Delegates daily tasks and oversees intern responsibilities
    • Meets 1:1 at least weekly for supervision and guidance

 FOOD SERVICE LIAISON (approximately 10% effort)

  • Attends regular Food Service Meetings with the Food Service Manager
  • Reviews menu cycles quarterly/yearly as written in policy and procedure manual
  • Assures portion sizes and exchanges of meals and snacks are appropriate and consistent with the nutrition department’s philosophy
  • Participates in weekly meetings to develop nutrition protocols and coordinate with food service staff, as needed
Qualifications::

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s Degree preferred

Experience:

  • Minimum of 1-year clinical nutrition experience in an acute care setting and; minimum of 1-year providing direct clinical nutrition care in a 24/7 eating disorder setting (Inpatient, Residential) OR minimum of 2-year experience in a Partial Hospitalization Program, Intensive Outpatient Program, or Outpatient Practice specializing in eating disorder treatment.

License/Certification:

  • Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist (RDN) - Commission on Dietetic Registration required
  • Licensed Dietitian/Nutritionist (LDN) - Commonwealth of MA required
  • Certified Eating Disorder Registered Dietitian (CEDRD) – IAEDP preferred
