* Patient Narrative: Meet Lex! As those who know him will tell you, Lex is a ball of joy who loves to smile and laugh all day long. His family is looking for skilled nurses to take care of him in his Cambridge home (LPN/RN – experience with patients like him is what matters most). Lex has a very rare muscle-wasting disease that has paralyzed his diaphragm, so he needs to be on ventilatory support 24/7. When needed, he requires trach, nose, and mouth suctioning. He receives additional breathing support with a cough assist machine and gets regular nebulizer treatments to keep him in tip-top respiratory health. He has a suprapubic catheter and is feed via gastric feeding (G tube). During the day, Lex needs someone who has solid assessment experience and will feel comfortable enough to stay alone with him while his parents are at work. Lex looks very stable because everyone works so hard to keep him healthy, but sometimes he needs to be assessed and treated quickly; ideally, it would be a clinician who can calmly handle things like this during the day (especially during bug season). Lex has a compromised immune system, so he needs nurses who would never come to work sick. Lex is in really good shape because his family and caregivers all work hard and proactively as a team to keep him in his best health. Lex has a loyal cat-Dikkat-who sleeps by his side most of the day. Lex and his family live in East Cambridge but have a guest parking pass and can also put your license on a long-term home care parking pass, so parking isn’t a big deal. During the day, Lex regularly naps from about 8 am to 11 am and then has a nap/chill time from 3:30 pm to 5 pm – but from 11 to 3, he needs someone who will actively engage with him and keeping him busy and happy.
