Summary:
Responsible and accountable for the care of the assigned patients and who assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates the care of the patient assigned to the unit, performs clerical functions, performs RN duties as assigned, and is able to communicate with the public, physicians, and other hospital personnel.

Functions: Functions as team leader, overseeing LPNs & CNAs assigned to his/her team. Directs others to assure care is based on patient needs, values, and choices. Practices autonomously within the scope of professional standards, the rules and regulations established by the Virginia Board of Nursing and maintains knowledge of the policies and procedures within the system. Has a working knowledge of the nursing process and demonstrates skill in developing and guiding collaborative collegial practice that delivers safe competent care. Demonstrates sensitivity and understanding of the diverse cultural backgrounds of our patients and caregivers. Maintains current knowledge of evidence-based nursing practice and possesses the ability to demonstrate critical thinking skills in the implementation of all phases of the nursing process. Actively participates in patient care quality and performance improvement through data collection, aggregation and analysis of relevant indicators of quality, which results in the development and implementation of action plans to include the monitoring of the effectiveness of improvements. Serves as a professional role model as a caregiver, mentor, teacher and resource for peers and other providers.

Med Surg/Peds- The Med Surg/Pediatric nurse will demonstrate the above functions. The care provided to each patient is specific to the patient's particular physical, age-specific and psychosocial needs. The patient population served by this position includes pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric. BLS required. PALS within 6 months of hire date, unless class availability dictates a longer time period. ACLS preferred.

ICU - The ICU nurse will demonstrate the above functions. BLS required. Will obtain ACLS within 6 months of hire, unless class availability dictates a longer time period. Will complete the dysrhythmia course as well as the cardiovascular drips course within 6 months of hire date, unless class availability dictates a longer time period. The care provided to each patient is specific to the patient's particular physical, age-specific and psychosocial needs. The patient population served by this position includes adult and geriatric.

Float Nurse - The Float nurse will demonstrate the above functions and will also exhibit competence in the Med Surg/Pediatric, ICU, Rehab, ER, and outpatient surgery areas. BLS required. Will obtain ACLS within 6 months of hire date and PALS within 6 months of hire date, unless class availability dictates a longer time period. In addition, will complete the dysrhythmia course as well as the cardiovascular drips course within 6 months of hire date, unless class availability dictates a longer time period. The care provided to each patient is specific to the patient's particular physical, age-specific and psychosocial needs. The patient population served by this position includes neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric.

Emergency Department - The ED nurse will demonstrate the above functions. BLS required. Will obtain ACLS and PALS within 6 months of hire date, unless class availability dictates a longer time period. In addition, completion of the dysrhythmia course as well as the cardiovascular drips course is preferred. The patient population served by this position includes neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric. TNCC and CEN are also preferred within 1 year of hire. NRP required - DCH ED.

Family Birth Center - The FBC nurse will demonstrate the above functions. BLS required. Will obtain ACLS and NRP within 6 months of hire, unless class availability dictates a longer time period. Assists in orientation of new employees to the unit. Serves as OR scrub and circulator. The care provided to each patient is specific to the patient's particular physical, age-specific and psychosocial needs. The patient population served by this position includes neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric.

Surgical Services - The outpatient/surgical nurse will demonstrate the above functions and will also exhibit competence with surgery and outpatient specific equipment: endoscopic equipment, laparoscopic equipment, and competence in laser safety. Creates and maintains a sterile field. Nurses will cross train in the Outpatient, Pre-op teaching, PACU, and surgical settings. Responsibilities include proficiency using Electronic Health Record, clinical assessment, and after hour and weekend call. The care provided to each patient is specific to the patient's particular physical, age-specific and psychosocial needs. The patient population includes pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric. BLS and ACLS are required, and PALs is required for PACU.

Inpatient Geropsych –The Inpatient Geropsych nurse will demonstrate the above functions and provide nursing care through physical and mental assessments, laboratory testing, plans of care and therapeutic treatments, as well as direct and indirect patient care services that meet the psychosocial, physical and general aspects of patient care. Meets the communication needs of patient and family. Knowledgeable of a wide range of disorders; cognitive, emotional, developmental, social and behavioral. Performs crisis intervention. Participates in the department's performance improvement and continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities. Patient population to be served: Adult to Geriatric. Preferred - 1 year experience in a behavioral healthcare setting. Current BLS. De-escalation training will be provided during orientation or within 6 months of hire date, unless class availability dictates a longer time period. . Basic computer knowledge. Strong interpersonal skills. Employee may work in high stress direct patient care areas. Stress levels may be high due to frequently dealings with life and death situations, physicians, families and other healthcare providers. Demands high levels of concentration and the ability to work in emotionally charged situations.

Inpatient Rehab- The rehabilitation RN will demonstrate the above functions, serves as a member of the interdisciplinary team and is responsible for goal setting and carryover of the established team goals to achieve patients' highest level of function. The inpatient rehabilitation RN communicates and consults with appropriate resources when needs are identified to ensure that quality care is provided. Assesses, plans, and implements patients' care and education ensuring inclusion of family/significant other/caregiver. Assists patient/family/caregivers develop and prioritize goals related to function. Promotes quality of life to patients with disabilities. Provides comfort and therapy to patients and families. Promotes health conducive adjustments for the patient, family, and community. The care provided to each patient is specific to the patient's particular diagnosis, physical, age-specific and psychosocial needs and ensures quality and appropriateness throughout the continuum of care. The patient population served by this position includes adult and geriatric. Current BLS.

Cardiac Stress Testing - The Cardiac Stress Testing RN will perform routine/emergency echocardiograms and stress echocardiograms. Provides coverage within noninvasive cardiology including but not limited to cardiac stress testing, Holter monitoring, event monitoring, cardiac telemetry, ambulatory blood pressure monitoring and electrocardiograms. Provides appropriate patient care to support and diagnose patients with cardiovascular disorders in accordance with departmental policies and procedures. 1-2 years ICU experience preferred. Cardiac stress testing experience preferred. EKG interpretation class required within 6 months of employment. BLS and ACLS certification is required. The patient population served by this position includes pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric.

Requirements: Associate’s degree or diploma from an accredited Nursing program required. Must be able to complete job related competencies as deemed necessary to the performance of the RN role.
