What You Will Be Doing:

As a Penske Data Platform Engineer I, you will participate in all aspects of guiding and supporting development teams as they implement and deploy their applications on cloud or on-premise platforms. In this role, you will specifically be responsible for the DB2 environment. You will work with the software development teams to troubleshoot issues as they occur while also building, scaling, and maturing the DB2 for i (a.k.a. DB2/400, IBM i, iSeries) platform. You will have an opportunity to lead the design of certain platform components and suggest new technology/tools based on industry and technological trends and advances. You will also consult with product owners and senior members of the staff to understand the business and application requirements and provide suggestions based on platform best practices. Focusing on high-level and technical systems design you will collaborate with Architects and Engineers to help build and maintain a robust environment for application development, deployment, hosting, data storage and ingestion.

Penske Responsibilities:

  • Act as the primary contact and lead support associate for multiple critical components of the platform and help resolve customer issues in a timely manner
  • Collaborate with platform product owners and play a critical role in end-to-end Operations Management of Application/Data Platform as a Service
  • Collaborate with technical/business leaders and platform product owners to acquire and understand requirements / acceptance criteria and provide platform stability
  • Participate in capacity planning, disaster recovery and high availability planning
  • Recommend observability standards and enable platform observability through logging and monitoring
  • Triage production issues and work with multiple teams to perform problem analysis
  • Run through query review workflow
  • Identify poorly running processes in production - CPU, plan cache analysis
  • Execute data fixes
  • Help with overnight DB deploys
  • Perform on-going research to explore new features, versions, and related technologies, and provide recommendations to enhance our offerings
  • Document standard run books and operating procedures and assign/review tasks from junior and offshore associate engineers
  • Participate in conducting new hire interviews
  • Work closely with the project team and report clearly and accurately to management
  • Build and maintain stable working relationships internally
  • Other duties as assigned

Penske Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science/Computer Engineering or equivalent years of software development/system administration experience required
  • 8-10 years of industry experience with knowledge of IBM i server and Db2 for i platform administration and programming languages required
  • 5+ years of hands-on DBA experience working with DB2 for i
  • 3+ years of experience with relational database (RDBMS) and OLTP/OLAP concepts
  • Basic IBM i navigation - ACS, Schemas, Run SQL, plan cache, calling a program, stored procedure, creating UDF, etc.
  • Writing complex SQL queries that use joins, sub-selects, with statements
  • Demonstrated ability to support and administer high volume and high velocity application/data environments
  • Strong experience with relational database (Db2 for i, a.k.a DB2/400) administration
  • Experience with build management and continuous integration tools preferred
  • Understanding of DevOps concepts
  • Professional demeanor works effectively in a team setting
  • Knowledge and experience of the Agile software development methodology
  • Aptitude and desire for learning new technologies and concepts
  • Ability to estimate medium to large-sized platform activities
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Regular, predictable, full attendance is an essential function of the job
  • Willingness to travel as necessary, work the required schedule, work at the specific location required, complete Penske employment application, submit to a background investigation (to include past employment, education, and criminal history) and drug screening are required
