Plains is currently looking to fill the position of Advanced Process Control (APC) Engineer, based in our Calgary, AB, corporate office. While reporting to the Manager, Electrical & Automation Engineering, you will act as the APC subject matter expert (SME) for all business units. In addition, you will be responsible for the full APC project lifecycle and will identify and quantify APC opportunities; lead and manage the execution of APC projects; and oversee the post-implementation phase of APC projects. You may also implement APC controllers, which includes pre-testing, controller design, plant modeling, and commissioning and start-up. Travel to field sites is expected (up to 30%).

Responsibilities

  • Identify and quantify opportunities for APC at Plains’ fractionation and gas processing facilities; liaise with Plains’ Commercial and Energy Management teams to quantify potential benefits.
  • Lead, manage and implement APC projects through the full project lifecycle.
  • Monitor, report on, and optimize performance of newly implemented APC controllers as well as existing controllers implemented in Honeywell Forge APC and AspenTech DMC3 systems.
  • Design and implement APC KPIs.
  • Plan and execute hardware and software upgrades to existing APC systems in coordination with facility controls specialists.
  • Design and install additional instrumentation, where required, for APC implementations in coordination with Operations and small project teams.
  • Review opportunities for inclusion of APC in capital expansion projects and work with expansion project teams to coordinate implementations.
  • Review, troubleshoot, and optimize basic process control strategies for existing facilities and expansion projects.
  • Support the field with tuning of challenging basic process control system (BPCS) control loops at process plants using Honeywell Experion and Allen-Bradley Logix control systems.
  • Review and approve controls related MOCs.
  • Use process history data and field testing to identify problems with field instrumentation and final control elements and recommend solutions.
  • Develop and deliver APC, control loop tuning, and other process control-related training for operations and engineering teams.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering and Canadian P.Eng. status (or immediate eligibility to attain status) with a minimum of 2 years’ APC experience and a minimum 3 years’ experience in plant operations or process control engineering.
  • Experience with Honeywell Forge or AspenTech DMC3 required.
  • Experience in data analysis, benefit assessment, justification, and budgeting for APC projects.
  • Experience with process control strategy design, configuration, commissioning, and start-up on DCS and PLC platforms.
  • Experience operating oil and gas facilities or working in operational support roles.
  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Able to travel to Canadian field locations (up to 30%) for major configuration changes, loop tuning, project commissioning, etc.
  • Flexible and adaptable to a heavy workload and changing work priorities, including multiple projects with short turnaround times.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean abstract.
  • Cleared criminal history (background) and satisfactory reference checks. #Plains
