Job Summary

To assist the Emergency Department Physicians or Residents and Orthopedic Physicians or Residents. Duties include, but not limited to, splinting, casting, assisting with minor procedures, wound care, applying fabricated devices, immobilization devices, traction, and overhead frames. Attends all Traumas in the Emergency Department. Works in collaboration with Supply Distribution and Sterile Processing to provide nursing staff with supplies and sterile equipment daily.

Accountabilities

  • Applies and maintains orthopedic devices as ordered by physicians throughout the hospital. Monitors and maintains all orthopedic equipment and supplies. - 10%
  • Performs simple, non-sterile dressing's changes on wounds greater than 48 hours old. Assists orthopedic surgeons with procedures as the first and second assistant or scrub technician. - 10%
  • Performs cast and splint application under the direction of the physician's orders. Applies any immobilization and mobilization devices to patients. - 10%
  • Applies skeletal and manual traction. Performs daily rounding on orthopedic patients as required. - 10%
  • Ensures that proper orders are completed using Cerner. Codes procedures on inpatient accounts using batch entry for procedures that are done on patients in electronic health record system. - 10%
  • Works in collaboration with the nursing and medical staff to provide special order patient's care supplies. Maintains appropriate levels to meet the work demand. Participates in patient education with other healthcare providers. - 10%
  • Completes daily compliance checks on Blanket warmers in the Emergency Department and ensures IV fluids are stocked and dated appropriately for expiration dates. - 10%
  • Stocks Trauma Bay cabinet with special order trays, EZ-IO needles, Arterial Line supplies, pressure bags, and Foley trays. This includes the stocking of all Personal Protective Equipment in the Trauma Bay. - 5%
  • Maintains the Sterile Cabinet in the Trauma Bay to ensure that all trays are sterilized and in the cabinet. When sterile items and trays are used, they must be taken down to sterile prep to be sanitized. - 5%

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent OR post-high school diploma/highest degree earned

Required Licensures

Completion of a Certified Orthopedic Technician certification from NBCOT or ASOP required. Heartsaver CPR required.

Other Required Skills/Experience

Basic computer knowledge of Windows operating environment
