Description

Under the general supervision of the Director of Med/ Surg, assumes the responsibility of maintaining the efficient functioning of the Med/ Surg in the absence of the Director of Med / Surg. 

Demonstrates awareness of ongoing needs of the units and provides leadership and direction to other team members in maintaining optimal standards of nursing care. 

Responsible for a continuously improving quality level of patient care service within Vaughan Regional Medical Center and to customers within the community.

Accountable for the supervision of other licensed and non-licensed nursing personnel for the Med/ Surg.  Supports the goals of Vaughan Regional Medical Center and the Medical Surgical and provides for the continuity and achievement of these goals. 

Serves as a support and resource to Med/ Surg. 

Assists the Department Director with managing budgetary guidelines and daily operations of the department. 

Works other than usual shifts as needed.

Provides patient care and performs other duties as needed.

Qualifications

Education:  Current Alabama Registered Nurse licensure.  BSN preferred. De-escalation training must be completed within 90 days of hire date.

Required CertificationsBLS (must be obtained within first 30 days of hire date); ACLS (must be obtained within first 12 months of date of hire); PALS (must be obtained within first 12 months of date of hire); TNCC (must be obtained within 2 years of date of hire).

Experience: 5 years Medical Surgical (Med/ Surg) nursing experience required, with a minimum of 2 years charge nurse/supervisory experience preferred.

Special Qualifications: Evidence of leadership abilities required. Excellent communication and computer skills.

Skills: Required ability to function in stressful situations. Verbal ability to present information and ideas related to nursing theory and practice. Ability to accept responsibility and accountability to perceive, delegate, and coordinate nursing care provided on assigned units as required with leadership qualities.  The position requires the cognitive ability and practical ability to provide nursing care appropriate to the patient population assigned, considering client age and diagnosis with full implementation of the nursing process to include assessment/reassessment, nursing diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation.

Physical Requirements:  Must be able to sit and stand for extended periods, walk at least 8 hours per day, lift/carry 25 pounds, hear alarms and telephone rings, distinguish colors, perform repetitive tasks/motions, have good eye/hand/foot coordination, and have clear vision at 20 or more feet with or without vision corrective device.
