MAIN JOB RESPONSIBILITIES / COMPETENCIESThe incumbent is a smart and practical lawyer who is part of the legal team as the commercial counsel.  The role will support STAAR’s day-to-day commercial contracting efforts, including drafting and negotiating customer, vendor, and physician consulting agreements, and contribute to the overall success of the legal team.  This role will also help support the legal review of marketing and promotional materials, including advising on applicable medical device marketing and other compliance regulations. This role will be located in STAAR’s Lake Forest, CA headquarters.Key Responsibilities:•    Commercial contracting:  Drafting and negotiating contracts and advising clients on a broad range of legal and contractual matters to support STAAR’s business; updating contract templates, playbooks and policies; and supporting overall contract management. The typical categories of contracts managed by this role will include customer and pricing, vendor services, physician consulting, distribution and import, data protection, clinical trial/investigator-initiated study and non-disclosure agreements. •    Cross-functional collaboration:  Interacting closely with business clients and third parties to understand business requirements and policies, including coordination with Procurement, Information Security, Privacy and Compliance.•    Systems and processes:  Support efforts to implement contract management procedures, tools and tracking, including policies and procedures to improve and enhance the contracting process.•    Marketing and promotion:  Serve as legal reviewer alongside medical and regulatory affairs team members in the review of marketing, advertising and promotional materials. •    Advice and counsel:  In coordination with other legal team members, provide clear and practical legal advice and risk guidance to commercial business partners and key stakeholders related to commercial activities, compliance, regulatory, and other related matters.•    Other functions and responsibilities as deemed necessary to support STAAR business needs.REQUIREMENTSEDUCATION & TRAINING•    Juris Doctorate (JD) and admission to practice in California (in good standing); or admitted to practice in another state and registered with the State Bar of California.EXPERIENCE•    At least 5+ years’ experience as an attorney, including law firm experience and in-house experience; medical technology company experience preferred.•    Experience drafting and negotiating commercial contracts.SKILLS•    General knowledge of medical technology industry, including applicable legal, compliance and regulatory frameworks.•    Self-motivated, with ability to independently identify, analyze and render practical legal advice and counsel.•    Strong contract drafting and negotiating skills, with appreciation for broader picture and long-term impact. •    Understanding of, and willingness to learn and develop skills to support, compliance, regulatory, marketing, advertising and promotional activities.•    Ability to build consensus with diverse stakeholders and third parties and form strong, collaborative working relationships with clients.•    Ability to manage shifting workload priorities, with strong organization skills and ability to meet multiple deadlines across a variety of projects and programs.•    Detail oriented, with a high degree of accuracy and efficiency.•    Excellent computer, communications, problem-solving, and analytical thinking skills.•    Team player focused on team and organizational success.•    Integrity, honesty, and trustworthiness are core operating principles.Pay range is $150-$200k - Final compensation will depend on experience. STAAR Surgical is an Equal Employment Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, protected veteran or disability status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
