The Outer Banks Hospital is a full-service critical access hospital offering a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services. The 21-bed facility is designed to meet the needs of the coastal community, whose year-round population of approximately 35,000 swells to about 350,000 in the summer season. Its campus includes four ORs, a medical/surgical unit, a labor & delivery suite with a dedicated caesarian section OR, a full rehabilitation therapy center, cancer treatment and radiation therapy center, and a 24-hour emergency department.

Position Summary

The Assistant Manager of Respiratory Care will assist the Respiratory Care Manager in various duties as delegated by the Manager. These duties may include coordinating, providing, and improving patient care in the Respiratory Care department scope of service. The Assistant Manager is able to foster clinical growth to improve quality and best practice strategies of the Respiratory Care staff through educational efforts. The Assistant Manager will assist the Manager with planning, organizing and directing all activities of Respiratory Care as directed by the Manager.

Responsibilities

1. Provides leadership, assists Respiratory Care Manager with planning, organizing and directing all activities of the Department of Respiratory Care:

Policies/Procedures
Delegation and Supervision
Problem-Solving
Interpersonal Relations and Communication
Unit, Department and Hospital Contributions
Demonstrates Service Excellence behaviors, demonstrates Cultural Attributes.
Demonstrates appropriate application of Respiratory Care management systems (i.e.,kronos, flexworks)

2. Provides age specific direct patient care according to department scope of services:

Assesses Patients
Develops a Plan of Care
Implements Patient Care
Evaluates and Revises Patient Care

3. Participates in education of self and others:

Assumes accountability for continued professional growth and development.

Maintains core and divisional/unit-based competencies as described in the divisional competency plan.

Attends and utilizes staff development programs and educational resources to meet unit objectives and/or individual objectives.

Fulfills mandatory educational requirements annually, which include but are not limited to:
1. JCAHO/OSHA competencies
2. Corporate Compliance/Code of Conduct
3. BLS-Health Care Provider, ACLS or PALS
4. Unit-specific skills
5. Occupational Health Screening

Maintains a record of participation in all professional educational activities, stays abreast of market and national trends.

Presents professional image for student learning.

Serves as resource to students by supervising patient care as appropriate and facilitates additional learning opportunities.

Functions as a clinical coach following clinical coach competency guidelines as needed.

Utilizes appropriate human and material resources, plans and implements staff development programs, which include the assessment of learning needs, objectives, content outline and evaluation methods.

Applies knowledge gained through continuing education activities to clinical practice.

Supports and assists staff in their work with students.

4. Participates in Quality Improvement (QI) Activities:

Changes practice behavior as result of QI data.
Identifies opportunities for improvement.
Participates in problem resolution activities.
Participates in data collection per unit QI plan.

5. Demonstrates Support of Research:

Active participation in research in clinical practice through active participation.

Assists in the identification of research projects that validate current practice, look for opportunities to broaden their scope of practice, and develop creative approaches to solve problems.

Assists in the evaluation of the relevance of research projects specific to their patient population.

Participates in the interpretation of data for their patient population.

Remains abreast of current research in their initial specialty area.

Implements the clinical inquiry process in collaboration with a nursing researcher.

Assists staff in interpreting and implementing research findings.

Actively builds a team of respiratory therapist that are involved in IRB approved projects.

Minimum Requirements

Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification, ACLS, and PALS is required.

Associate College Degree: Respiratory Care is required.

RRT with at least 3 years of experience is required.

NC Licensure as a Respiratory Care Practitioner is required.

American Heart Association ACLS and PALS is required.

For those working in non medical center hospitals American Heart Association BLS, ACLS, PALS and NRP is required.

4 yr College Degree - Major: Respiratory Care, Business, and Health Care Administration is preferred.

1 - 2 years experience in leadership and supervision is preferred.
