JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for creating, managing, and troubleshooting large and complex network systems for the University. Working under a supervisor's guidance, the position applies advanced skills in network design, configuration, and analysis, and documents the network installations. The position serves the network needs of academic, administrative and student users.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop, review, and maintain documentation for the planning, testing, implementation, and use of network systems.
  • Research and evaluate new network technologies and solutions.
  • Monitor and maintain the high availability and functionality of university computer systems and provide emergency response and repair for network outages or implement network changes during off-peak hours as needed to ensure optimal service levels and minimize user disruption and network downtime.
  • Using a broad knowledge of network hardware and software and related systems, perform analysis, diagnosis, and resolution of complex network issues in large-scale systems for diverse user groups, and propose and execute appropriate solutions for network hardware or software enhancements.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to users and other less experienced network administrators.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Additional duties performed at the level of Network Administrator 3 include:

  • Lead the design, planning, configuration, implementation, and support of modern network systems for large projects.
  • Ensure timely delivery of all project phases, from user data collection to network activation and testing.
  • Coordinate with vendors, clients, and internal teams to create network specifications, purchase equipment, and set up physical network infrastructure for voice, data, and video communication.
  • May oversee one or more full time or student staff members, as well as monitor the status of delegated responsibilities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associate s degree in computer science or a discipline related to the field of computer networking and six years of related experience OR Bachelor's degree in computer science or a discipline related to the field of computer networking and four years of related experience OR eight years of related experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse group of people and be able to prioritize work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to write specifications and document existing and planned network systems.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and attention to detail.
  • Implementation and troubleshooting of layer 2-3 switching and routing technologies from a major network vendor (cisco, juniper, arista).
  • Working knowledge of routing protocols (OSPF, BGP) with an overall understanding of routing concepts.
  • Experience with firewalls from a major vendor.
  • Experience with modern network monitoring and management systems such as SolarWinds, PRTG, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure.
  • Must have reliable transportation and be willing to travel to locations throughout the state.
  • Ability to design, install, configure, and maintain network infrastructure and security systems.
  • Experience monitoring network performance and troubleshoot issues using various tools and techniques.

Additional minimum qualifications for the level of Network Administrator 3 Only:

  • Associates degree eight years of related experience OR Bachelor s degree and six years of related experience OR ten years of related experience.
  • At least seven years network related experience, which includes design and implementation of large-scale network systems. Specialized experience in at least one or more specialty areas.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and manage large or complex projects to achieve timely, successful completion.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Relevant professional networking certifications (CCNP, JCINP, or equivalent industry certifications).
  • Networking Device OS Cisco IOS/NX-OS, Palo Alto, Fortinet.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of stateful firewalling.
  • Present knowledge of, and experience troubleshooting, common network protocols TCP/IP, VPN, OSPF, BGP, MPLS, DHCP, STP.
  • Demonstrated experience with Cisco Prime or Catalyst Center network monitoring software.
  • Demonstrated experience with wireless design and management in a large enterprise deployment including academic, administrative, hospitality and high-density venues.
  • Demonstrated experience in automation of processes using a scripting language.
  • Demonstrated experience with VOIP technologies and concepts.
  • General understanding of Cloud networking with a focus on Microsoft Azure.
  • Network management/monitoring experience SNMP, syslog, Netflow.
  • Demonstrated experience with specialized networks for industrial systems, SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) networks.
