TRC Talent Solutions is partnering with an industrial automation and manufacturing systems organization seeking a Lead Mechanical Designer to support the development of custom automation equipment. This role focuses on end-to-end mechanical design ownership across complex manufacturing systems, with strong collaboration across engineering, fabrication, vendors, and customer teams.

Summary

The Lead Mechanical Designer will be responsible for leading mechanical design efforts for automated manufacturing systems, including full 3D modeling, system layout, and design validation. This role requires strong SolidWorks expertise, practical fabrication knowledge, and the ability to support onsite system integration and commissioning. The position also includes mentorship of junior designers and cross-functional coordination with internal and external stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Lead mechanical design for automated manufacturing and industrial systems

  • Develop and manage complex 3D models and large assemblies in SolidWorks

  • Create detailed engineering drawings with proper tolerancing and GD&T application

  • Design mechanical systems integrating robotics, conveyors, pneumatics, and servo-driven components

  • Ensure designs are manufacturable, functional, and optimized for assembly and maintenance

  • Collaborate with clients, vendors, and internal engineering teams to deliver complete design solutions

  • Review drawings and designs for accuracy, performance, and fabrication feasibility

  • Support onsite assembly, troubleshooting, and commissioning activities as needed

  • Participate in design reviews and provide technical recommendations for improvements

  • Mentor and support junior mechanical designers and engineers

  • Ensure alignment between design intent and final system build

Requirements

  • 5+ years of mechanical design experience in industrial or automation environments

  • Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks 3D modeling, assemblies, and detailing

  • Strong understanding of GD&T, materials selection, and fabrication methods

  • Experience designing systems incorporating automation components such as:

    • Robotics

    • Pneumatic systems

    • Servo systems

    • Conveyor systems

  • Ability to interpret and apply engineering drawings and manufacturing requirements

  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently

  • Experience supporting system build, integration, and commissioning activities

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills across technical teams
