TRC is partnering with a manufacturing automation organization seeking a Lead Robotics & Controls Engineer to design, deploy, and support advanced robotic and PLC-based automation systems. This role blends robotics integration, controls engineering, system commissioning, and technical leadership across full project lifecycles.
Summary
The Lead Robotics & Controls Engineer will be responsible for designing and commissioning industrial robotic cells and PLC-based automation systems supporting high-volume manufacturing operations. This role leads technical execution across robotics integration, controls programming, SCADA development, system testing, and onsite startup activities while mentoring engineering team members and interfacing directly with clients and vendors.
Responsibilities
Design, develop, program, and commission PLC and robotic automation systems
Build and support robotic cells from concept through deployment, including robot selection and system architecture
Program industrial robots (FANUC, ABB, KUKA, Epson, or equivalent platforms)
Develop PLC logic using Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or Mitsubishi platforms
Design and implement SCADA solutions using Ignition
Conduct system testing, validation, and performance verification against design requirements
Lead onsite installation, startup, and commissioning activities at customer facilities
Troubleshoot robotic and controls systems during integration and production ramp-up
Work with conveyance systems, material handling equipment, pick-and-place systems, and end-of-arm tooling
Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and manufacturing teams across project phases
Provide technical leadership, mentoring, and training to junior engineers
Interface directly with customers, vendors, and internal stakeholders throughout project execution
Support continuous improvement initiatives and production optimization efforts
Ensure system reliability, safety, and compliance with design specifications
Requirements
Strong background in industrial controls system design and automation engineering
Hands-on experience with industrial robotics (FANUC, ABB, KUKA, Epson, or equivalent)
PLC programming experience (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, and/or Mitsubishi)
Experience designing and commissioning robotic cells from concept to startup
Knowledge of material handling systems, conveyance, and end-of-arm tooling
Experience developing Ignition SCADA systems
Strong leadership, communication, and customer-facing skills
Ability to train and mentor engineering teams
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field (or equivalent experience)
5+ years of relevant industry experience
Willingness to relocate to Aurora, OH (required by client)
