Job Summary:
The Lead Planer Mill Lumber assists the supervisor in overseeing the team and managing daily operations of the planer mill. This role involves leading the planer mill team, ensuring adherence to safety protocols, maintaining equipment, and guaranteeing that lumber meets quality standards. The Lead works closely with other departments to coordinate production schedules and achieve company objectives.
What you will do:
Lead and Leadership:
- Lead and train, and lead planer mill staff, including machine operators, laborers, and maintenance personnel.
- Schedule shifts and assign tasks to ensure optimal productivity and coverage.
- Fill in as supervisor on shift as needed.
Operational Management:
- Assist in overseeing the operation of planer mill machinery, ensuring proper setup, operation, and maintenance.
- Coordinate with the sawmill and other departments to ensure a steady supply of rough lumber and efficient workflow.
- Monitor production output to ensure it meets quality and quantity standards
Quality Control:
- Assist in inspecting lumber for quality, identifying defects, and ensuring compliance with industry standards.
- Help implement and maintain quality control processes to ensure consistent product quality.
- Work with the quality assurance team to address any quality issues and implement corrective actions.
Maintenance and Safety:
- Ensure all machinery and equipment are properly maintained and in good working order.
- Assist in implementing and enforcing safety protocols to ensure a safe working environment for all employees.
- Conduct regular safety meetings and training sessions to promote workplace safety.
Administrative Duties:
- Assist in maintaining accurate production records, including daily output, machine downtime, and employee attendance.
- Help prepare reports on production metrics, inventory levels, and other operational data.
- Assist in presenting KPI data.
Continuous Improvement:
- Identify opportunities for process improvements and assist in implementing changes to enhance efficiency and productivity.
- Stay updated on industry trends, new technologies, and best practices to keep the planer mill operations competitive.
- Collaborate with management to develop and implement strategic plans for the planer mill
What you will need:
Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent; a degree or certification in a related field is a plus.
Skills:
- Strong leadership and team management skills.
- Excellent knowledge of planer mill machinery and operations.
- Proficient in quality control and production processes.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
- Effective communication and people skills.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand, walk, and perform physical labor for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and carry heavy objects, up to fifty pounds.
- Good hand-eye coordination and mechanical aptitude.
Work Environment:
- The role involves working in a mill environment, which may include exposure to noise, dust, and varying temperatures.
- Safety gear such as helmets, gloves, and eye protection are required.
